My friend has jus bought himself an RS250, and has been told a couple of ways to start it, one is to leave it til the speedo goes from 'Cold' to the Engine temperature, and one other way says thats not to leave it until its warm as it will clog it up.

Which way do you think is the right one?

I personally think until the speedo reads the engine temperature, as you don't want to cold seize, but he wanted me to post this.

Thanks in Advance.

Letting it tick over will oil the plugs, but then a little blast onces its warm will quickly blow all that crud off them.

I'd let it tick over for a minute, get it off choke, then ride off gently until its warm.

Call me old fashioned, but I always thought the speedo measured speed - not temperature?

From here
"Details from dash. Notice the posted max velocity - impressive, huh?"

At the start of this 'RGV250 Kit Manual' it has:

"3. Warming Up
Always warm up the engine before running in the following manner:

1) For 1 - 2 minutes, rev the engine up and down with the range of 5,000 - 6,000 rpm.
2) For another 1 - 2 minutes, rev the engine up and down, limiting the highest revolution to 8,000 rpm.
3) When the water temperature reaches approximately 55'C, test drive for approximately 50 m and check the operation of gearshifting, clutch, brake etc. (If an appropriate warming up site is available).

(If the water temperature rises to more than 90'C, check the system immediately because there may be problems like leakage, insufficient water, etc.)

My (pre 98) dash isn't as fancy.

Those instruction are related to a race bike I wouls suspect, I wouldn't be so harsh with a normal road bike personally.

So far I've just left mine to warm up 'normally'.. but haven't heard anything official one way or another.

Here would probably be a good place to try.

Hi

Personal feeling is to ride the bike as soon as you can, but be very gentle and use no more than 50% of the available revs until it is up to temperature.

One problem you can find is that the engine will reach running temperature and then drop a fairly large amount when the thermostat first opens.

All the best

Keith

I always used to leave it to tick over for a couple minutes, the engine and gearbox are horrible to use from cold.
