Crying or Very sad

Its a shame, as I had been really vigilant with water changes etc ... and they are 2 weeks old now ... so plenty of time for the friendly bacteria to have established in the gravel/filter ..

I am actually wondering if I have done too much water changing and cleaning?

Anyway, guess which one of my finned friends passed away ... (this is an old photo when both were alive obviously, so don't say they both look alive to me!! Very Happy).

Change the water? , I found years ago that when I kept gold fish , which were not really mine anyway but rather my dad's who'd left them for me to look after, I found that NOT changing the water regularly kept them alive longer than did when changing the water...

I'd change it when there were quite a few turds, and sometimes the water would go all green and murky BUT I was advised that this is healthy as long as you use a bubbler thing.

But then again I was lazy and kept plenty of those cleaner fish and snails too.

A good clue is if they are moving or not, are they?

I used to have a goldfish, i won him at a funfair, his name was Neo Razz, I changed the water once in about 3 years, there was algae on the side of the tank, but he seemed to like it, he would feed off it, was quite sad when he died.

meh fun fair fish , they always have these nasty white parasites on them that you have to use this £10 medicine on them (put it in the water) for 2 weeks.

Neo dident, He was a fantastic orange/gold, i think your right as long as there is oxygen getting into the water it seems best to leave it alone... It probably stresses them out being netted and moved while you ransack their home...

I think it is supposed to be a good idea to change part of the water, especially whilst the tank is getting 'established' ... it dilutes the nitrate levels that build up until the bacteria have got established ...

I was changing ~1/5 of the water EVERY day ... and sucking excess poo/food up with the gravel syphon thingy

That seems quite excessive SV650, every day?

I think there are additives to stop nitrate build up anyway?

EDIT: Oh and of the two times i did change the water, when returning them to the tank, i would first drop them in the tank, but still inside the plastic bag/bowel, so the water temperatures would have a chance to equalize, i think they can go into shock if the temp is different...

EDIT again: Neo lived by himself for 3 years, i think it helps them develope a hardy personality Thumbs Up

I tended to leave them in there when I was doing it ...

The other fella looks nice and healthy (to be honest the dead one looked externally fine) ... perhaps it was nothing I did 'wrong' and just the other fish's time?!

So its just the one fish now ....

Do fish get lonely?? ... he has come to the front of the tank and just keeps looking at me ... all lost ... Sad

Hope you haven't flushed him yet. Sometimes fish float upside down when they have eaten too much. Google how many times people have thrown away live fish just because they are upside down in the water.

Probly just needs a good fart. I can't move after I've eaten too much, until I've farted.

I did consider/was hopeful that he might just be having a rest ... so after fishing him out (pun fully intended!! Very Happy) ... I left him in my fish cleaning jug with a bit of water ... sadly even after 4hrs no movement ... so he duly got flushed Sad

Here he is in the jug RIP fisshy Sad

The other (live) fish looks so glum Sad

Ahh... sad
Maybe you were being over protective
The water changes seem a bit excessive, and the poo sucking
My daughter had a new tank set up a few months ago
It had it's first water change after a week and that was about a third or less

New fish are finicky anyway
Of every ten lil ones you buy you have to expect about 4 to die in the first couple of weeks
They get shipped form japan and all over at a very young age
Not suprising really

Just buy a couple more each weekend until you have enough left after the deaths

aww your always gutted when your fish die, even though there only fish, me and my other half bought 6 fish in summer last year, we bought 2 angel fish, 2 shark things, a puffer fish and a female fighter fish
The puffer fish died within hours of putting him in the tank, he had an eye infection or something?
And the fighter fish ate the rest Sad she is the only one left now

Your not changing with straight tap water are you? That will do more damage than if you just left the tank to get dirty due to all the chemicals in the water.

You need to condition it first before adding it to the tank with something like this . . . .
