Any telephone engineers out there?

If there's anyone on BCF knowledgeable about telephone systems can you help me out?

Basically, I'm moving my business to a new premises. At the moment, I have a BT Versatility system which uses 4 incoming ISDN lines going to two extensions. I don't use ISDN for any data transfer, just telephones.

In the new premises I would like 3 or 4 incoming lines going to 3 maybe 4 extensions.

BT had my pants down 3 years ago with this Versatilty system. I was renting it at about £250 a quarter. The lease will be up just before I move premises. My BT rep said I can end the lease and they will probably not want to collect the old system. If that's the case I'd like to move the system myself. Is this easy to do? I do have the Versatility software (but no cable to connect to the CCU).

If this is too much of PITA to do myself I'll just sell the system. I've seen a Samsung EZlink 440 system for sale, which takes 2 incoming ISDNs I believe and can be stacked.

Basically, I want to the system to be as cheap as possible, as I'm still smarting from the ass raping BT gave me last time. They've quoted me £1400 + VAT to install a system this time as follows:

Thanks for the links Bazza. I've thought about VOIP, but not really looked into it.

I've just given them a call and they're going to email me a quote.

Are there any disadvantages service wise?

Sounds like a plan TBH. Our phone bills are quite high anyway, so we might save a bit of money on that front too.

We have a few clients (we do the IT but can supply telephone systems if required) who have gone down this route, rather than investing in a proper telephone system.

I would just suggest you consider how much you rely on the telephones for your business. If you need that connectivity would not suggest you go down the voip route. From our clients experiences you will lose business (ignored advice about telecomms!) and there is no comeback should you lose connectivity. If you don't rely on it and can switch to mobiles should the need arise then ok.

Not selling just want to make sure you are covering all the bases.

Pretty much what Bigeds said.

Although I will add that if you go down the voip route I would get a dedicated broadband connection for the voip preferably sdsl with sla's attached. O if not at least have a router that can priorotise traffic.

I went quite far down the VOIP route but bottled out to be honest. As we are primarily a telephone mail order company I need reliabilty, so if I went for VOIP I would need another broadband connection dedicated to phones only, and given that most of our calls are to mobile phones the savings were pretty much negated.

So I've decided to simply move the Versatility system that I leased to the new premises. I know a BT engineer who will do the move for £100 job done. My BT rep says that at the end of a contract they rarely send someone in to retrieve the equipment, but if they do I'll just buy a used system from eBay for about £100-150 and give them that.
