So.. i forgot my kickstand and dropped her

So yeah... on saturday i noticed my speedo wasnt working as i was on the way to get petrol, so i filled up, paid, got back on the bike then remembered i was going to check the speedo... got off the bike... and.. she fell over.. i guess i knocked the kickstand off when i got on the bike!



the result - a broken clutch lever - or so i thought

turns out i've cracked my left-hand engine case too, which promptly dumped its oil all over the car park at work this morning.

I've leant the bike over the other way to stop any more oil coming out..

cleaned up the area with some sand paper and tried to fix it with that putty instant metal stuff, buty it simply will not stick to the aluminium casing!... so i have two questions:

1) to get the bike home tonight, can any of you recommend a more sticky fix - the crack doesnt go to the edge of the casing so should be fairly easy to repair.

2) what bikes share the same engine casings as the GSX-R 400 GK76A (if any)

i would like to get some casing protectors if there are any available, they're obviously quite vunerable.

2), look up the part number on ron ayres and then do a reverse look to find what bikes share that part.

sometimes doesn't work due to the colour of the casing though

i'm not sure what the part number is unfortunately..

not sure where i could get it either! there's no workshop manuals for my bike

I did the same thing to mine (damage, not the method), although my damage was to the right hand side. It cost me about £40 quid for the new engine cover.

To patch the leak for the 3 or 4 days that it took for the part to arrive, I used araldite rapid. It did't stop the leak completely, but got it down to just a drip now and again.

If you do use araldite, make sure you prep the area properly as it will not stick well the an oily or dirty surface, and give it plenty of time to cure, especially in this cold weather. Overnight would be best given the heat that the engine creates.

Update:

The casing is repairable - given it to a friendly alu welder who will have it sorted before the week is out for a tenner, will just need to make the front smooth and paint it then..

a friend of mine is going to make me some sacrificial casings to go over my engine casings on both sides out of carbon fibre, on 10mm spacers - for a few brews at the next club meeting.

and i'm going to invest in some of the R&G crash bungs too, they're £55 plus postage from R&G direct (when i asked 3 weeks ago)

luckily there's a B&Q about 2 minutes walk from my work so i went and got some araldite rapid steel and borrowed a lighter off one of the security guards at work. this held so well that i struggled to get it off when i got home!

on inspecting the inside of the casing there was the crack - which didnt go to the edge of the casing or the bolt holes (which is good) and also a small puncture which didnt appear to go all the way through, but i'm going to have both welded up.

hopefully be back on the road just after this crap snowy/icy weather passes.
