Zipped 'normal' boots...worth it?

For my daily commute I generally wear some old Milatry boots donated to me by Goose a few years ago.
Not only are these looking fairly tatty, but one sole is actually pretty smooth now (partly thanks to only being able to use my left leg for a while.)

Was just going to get another set of Magnums, but noticed they now come with zips for 'easier access'. Always thought there was just something 'wrong' with a zip normal style leather shoes, but does it actually work well? Anyone else use them or similar?

It's faster than doing and un-doing your laces. Not that you usually bother to do that so your mileage may vary.

You said my zippy magnums were 'wrong and geigh' if I recall...

You will break the tabby bits off the zips. I did this within about a week of ownership. But if you stick a keyring ring on instead it's all good. Had mine a few years now, normal Magnum rules apply.

I find zippy magnums annoying for kickstarting, because it rips the zip apart, other than that they're good boots, quite cold though.

i think velcro is where its at for commuter boots

i have some of hein gericks bottom of the range from a few years ago, and they are perfect

no armour, and non-rigid sole makes them comfy as trainers

I want them to be reasonable 'every day' shoes - though, hmmm, not so sure about wearing zipped-boots for a night out in town, etc .

Happy with fairly rigid sole etc (magnum's have metal in them and this GI-boots are significantly harder ), but do want it to still look reasonably like a normal shoe/boot.
They also need to be fairly tough, which bike boots don't tend to be - magnum's aren't that great either, but a fair bit better than most bike boots. Even when on both feet, I think I'm quite a 'heavy walker' (aka fat ).

After using up a whole tin of polish in two uses to try and rejuvinated these current ones a bit, I might even look after the next set a bit better!

Freaks. Been wearing magnums for years (I have magnum shaped feet and a shoei shaped head) and my average lifespan from a pair of boots is around 5 years, maybe a little longer.

Not tried the zipped ones but I'd be a bit dubious about them, I seem to recall Mister James liking zippy magnums though.

Mine possibly get a little more abuse than others - which is why I was all the more impressed how well these army boots have done. They've been down the road a few times, been used for running, lots of moshing and general jumping up and down, off road motorbiking, had all my weight on the left one for a few months and plenty of other stuff.

Just seen a new pair on ebay for £10 no reserve, so might chuck a bid in as the more I think about zipped boots the less I like the idea as a 'general' boot - might still look at some just for work, but not sure if the time-saving is worth it.

I bought lace up gortex army boots brand new from ebay for £33 intead of around £150 for what's worth. I wear them on and off the bike. Doesn't take long to lace them up. Broken laces are less aggro than broken zips.

If my trousers were to cover my boots when sitting down, they'd be dragging the floor when standing up... life is more complicated than you might think!

And yes, it's not the using of the zip I have the issue with, but it's very prescence!

I noticed some of those Goretex boots on ebay... how do they do in the summer?
I tend to use my boots at festivals etc, jumping about in them and the like, so was thinking they might be a bit warm.

No worse than anything any other boot I'd say (although summer is a distant memory now). I'm pretty sure they're meant to be breathable. But if you can get a cheap pair and you don't like them you can sell them on easy enough and not lose any money. The pair I have are comfy. Box said cold weather though.

So can you put these Magnum boots with the zips on simply using the zip? And not have to undo the laces?

I decided I couldn't hack the 'image' (see, I am a tart really ) and went for a pair of the goretex army boots; new for £50.50 delivered.
Actually a bit harder to take off than my old boots, but <shrugs>, I'll survive .
May reconsider in summer, but will probably just use my old ones for festival and other 'casual' use (though some grip probably would be useful at Glastonbury).

If you have fat calves like me then you will end up breaking the zip.

I've broken both of mine now. Doesn't bother me too much as I just tuck my trousers over them and that holds them together.
