So here's the prob from the start.

My brother bought a gsxr 600 98 last year, was going fine, then on the way to moto gp at donnington the bike just died on the motorway, all power just cut out. We pulled over and managed to jump it of my bike. But it died 30 seconds later. Ended up pushing it off the hard shoulder and picking it up in a van ( after he got on the back of mine and we went to the GP obviously)

On getting home and stripping her of her fairing we found the connector block to the reg/rec had melted. We checked the rest of the loom and found a couple of shitty earths. Cleaned them up and fitted a new reg/rec. Done all the multimeter checks and seemed fine.

Last week she wouldn't start, we thought it was a dead battery as it hadn't been ridden for a week or two. Once we got it started we took the bikes out for a ride, when we stopped it would start, dead battery again. So we bump started her and rode home. When we got home we found the same thing again, melted connector block to the reg rec.

Im thinking it could be a faulty generator? Surely a reg/rec should last long than a 6 months or so, Even a suzuki one.

Or could a short somewhere cause this.

If anyones experienced the same problem it would be good to hear from you. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks guy's.

My guess would be that you have a short to earth somewhere, or your battery is stuffed. Unfortunately very hard to diagnose. First thing I'd do is start pulling the loom about, see if there are any chaffed wires, especially under the seat/tank and around the headstock, where they may only be troublesome when the bike is riden.

i thought fuses were supposed to stop this... got any fusebox bodges?

im guessing something along the loom is shorting. get a new one and try it.

My mates R1 suffered the same, melted reg/rec connector and various others, tracked down to a bodged earth cable, replaced it with a proper one and it's been fine since.

cheers guys, what i thought, just have to bite the bullet and set a day aside to inspect the whole loom. deffo gonna be an ebay reg/rec now, not gonna pay out for a genuine one again.

I've heard someone say that starting the bike with the lights on, on an srad burns out the reg/rec. But i've had no probs with mine.

Mine was Canadian so the lights were hardwired on, never had my reg/rec fry in over 20,000km. I can't honestly remember but I think there was a relay that cut the headlights when you started it, I might be getting mixed up with another bike though, either way I doubt that would cause any problem.

I would test your alternator to make sure it's putting out the correct figures.
