I want to rate this as FUNNY, purely because the stupidity is laughable. ____________________ The BCF's very own Party boy! Though he's getting old and feeling it!

Look on the bright side - within a week, his netbook will be trojanned, virused and hijacked to the point of inoperability.
Which is nice. ____________________ "That's it. You people have stood in my way long enough. I'm going to clown college."

I'm Linuxing now.
The OP probably doesn't realise that there are as many different variations of Linux as there are uses for a computer.
That said, some of those smaller computers come pre-loaded with some pretty crappy flavours of linux. Mostly commercial variants it must be said. Any of the open source versions I've tried have been very good at doing what they were supposed to do, even the really minimalist ones.
I totally blew my bosses mind at work the other day by assembling a PC from bits in the computer "graveyard" we have upstairs, loading up a linux operating system (puppy) and playing him a video off youtube without fitting a hard drive. I was trying to make a point about how wasteful programmers are with their use of RAM.
He commented that it started up faster than his Vista home PC which has four times the ram and double the processing power. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

i have seen the SAME argument time and time again on countless forums.. I even started 1 myself when Vista came out.. Got over 100 posts...
At the end of the day what it boils down to
Do you like...
1. Microsoft and there marketing and control over the PC..
2. Bill Gates and the money he has made..
3. Do you like playing with and having control over your PC.. ____________________ https://justfuckinggoogleit.com/ |

It's swings and roundabouts really, lets not forget that Windows enabled users to run a PC without ever being faced with a command-line over 12 years ago, something that few linux distros can claim even now. Yes OSX right there with it, but that doesn't have to contend with anything like the amount of hardware possibilities that windows does.
I must admit though, the OPs point is an annoying one, I refurbish and resell PCs and laptops and trying to sell a linux based machine is a mission and a half, and I suspect that a good portion of the ones that I do eventually sell get wiped and XP'd up the second they get home regardless of how well I configure and demonstrate them. It's a little frustrating really, Ubuntu is 100% viable as a full on replacement for the vast majority of users out there, with a little tinkering it's easily useable as a light duty gaming machine too (I had no performance issues running Steam and WoW through wine). Just most buyers are too afraid to take the plunge even when the lack of a windows license means the PC is upwards of 30% cheaper ____________________ 2010 Triumph 1050 Sprint ST |

Thing is for the average user learning windows was probably a daunting enough task, let alone trying to learn how to use a command line to mess around with files and so on.
With the netbooks I don't see why windows is necessary, on the ones I've used the operating system was basic enough to let you do everything you could need on it without breaking anything.
Although it could easily be argued that as long as you aren't doing any major stuff to your computer then linux can be more than enough for a person, I wouldn't be surprised if you could get windows skins for linux actually. ____________________ Past: 55 Sym Jet, 91 ZZR250, 03 NSR125R. I ain't no PC guru but I feel like a fully ordained nerd when I open a cmd window and do some real basic stuff. The majority of PC operators really believe that you are some sort of H4x0r.
Better still.

I spent a fair bit of time installing and maintaining Decnet networks on VMS in the early '80s. 8" discs FTW. ____________________ https://www.metacafe.com/watch/1972097/how_to_behave_on_a_forum/ |
