I dont smoke, Nor does my Girlfriend.
But in my bathroom, All I can smell is stale cigarette smoke. It is coming from the vents in the wall. My bathroom has no windows so its vented.

Whats the best way to try to eliminate this smell? Could I fit an extractor fan which just bellows all the smokey air back back into the central hollowing between my bathroom wall and next door's wall.

Its a terrace house by the way, There is a central hollowing between my house and next door, which pipes for the sink, bath, toilet run through.

I know exactly what Ben means, last year I lived in a house of smokers and the smell was horrendous. Hardly constitutes neighbours from hell, but I can understand the annoyance.

Had the same problem when I lived in a flat. Upstairs and us shared the same soil stack and associated cavity.

Found it to be worse when the wind blew from a certain direction due to the increased pressure on one side of the block. We never managed to solve it, however keeping less towels in the bathroom helped reduced the time the smell lingered.

Also, dampness exaggerates the smell, so keep it as dry as possible - hard I know, being a bathroom.

Luckily I moved out before i was forced to do anything drastic about it. Ex GF hated it, but he (the smoker) soon got evicted.

Duck tape?

There's not too much you can do to be honest and I feel your pain. It ruined the flat for us. Being out and about all day to come home to a stale smelly (pub toilet) smell. It's like living with a tramp.

Is it your house? If so some drastic re-engineering of the ventilation system could be undertaken? Or just seal up all the vents and always leave the door open.

Or increase the ventilation to the cavity, but this could go the other way and force the smell in.

Had the same problem when I used to live in a council flat, except it was weed coming through.

Laughing

We taped it off and eventually covered the whole vent up.

Ok, heres what you do, remove vent cover, place a piece of mackeral or similar fishy/smelly object and then fit a small extractor fan where the vent cover was. Leave that one for a few days and they will be the ones with the problem.

You can't put an extractor fan into a cavity wall, if the bathroom is on an external wall you could put an extractor fan on that venting to the outside. That might help you a little. Speak to a builder and see if building regs will allow you to block the current cavity vent in exchange for the external extractor fan.

The extractor fan will only be on with your bathroom light though, you can't realistically have it running permenantly! so if you can't get the current vent bricked up then it doesn't really solve too much for you.

take your vents out carefully, dont break it,
Buy some sealent or expanding foam, and put it on the opening to there vent so none comes out into yours? if you can get that kind of reach of course. or the other option is to tell them to stop smoking there please as your non smokers...?

The only smoking she does is Cock smoking. Cool Thumbs Up

As for the Fan. There is already a fan in the vent on the wall, But it doesn't work.

The terminal on it is kicking out a live, But the fan doesn't work. So the motor must be burnt out.

I am liking the idea of blocking up their vent though. Providing I can see / reach it from my vent hole. Cool

Really how come ? Can't you just get a separate fan or is there some regs against that ?
