do i have the wrong router ?

someone has kindly given me a 54mbps wireless adsl2+ Modem router (with 4-port 10/100 Mbps)

im with virgin and so have a cable modem,

now that i've got it home, im thinking its not going to work for me

this is because i have nothing to plug into the adsl socket

but there are still 4 LAN type sockets

would this mean i could plug the cable modem, and any pics into these LAN type sockets, and it will work at giving two pcs access to the modem ?

well I've just plugged both the cable modem, and the PC into the router, and my pc is accessing the net through the router without me even setting anything up, so i guess it works

im now trying to get the wireless function up to link a wireless laptop, but the installation cd says the router isnt detected by the pc, when it clearly is, as im getting internet through it, wierd

any ideas ?

Sorry its the wrong type.

You need a cable router.

This takes an ethernet input from your Virgin modem. (rj45)

Whereas an adsl router, plugs in to your phone socket using an rj11 phone cable.

Cable routers are normally cheaper though.

I would recommend D-link or Linksys.

I would avoid Edimax.

well it seems to be working

im upstairs, and the laptop is picking up the signal from downstairs where the wireless router and cable modem are

its a completely unsecured network at the moment though, so even if i dont have to mess with settings to get it to work, i need to mess with settings to get it to be secure

You might be able to get it to work, it would just take some fiddling in the router. I managed to get my netgear to share internet both wirelessly and wired and it gains its internet from a lan cable (rj45).

my laptop accessing internet wirelessly upstairs stopped, and i realised, that it has latched onto an unsecured wireless network with internet of one of my neighbours, while although it could detect my wireless router, it still has the security set up by the previous owner, so i will have to get the password from him i guess

the main thing is, with the latop connected to the router with a cable, and the cable modem connected to the router with a cable, i can access the internet on the works laptop, it will be a bonus when i get it working wirelessly

What make and model is the router? It'll have a hard reset pin on it somewhere that'll allow you to completely wipe all settings and passwords.

Alternatively you could log onto it through your works machine that I assume is connected to it via ethernet?

What OS is your works machine running?

When I was on NTL for my internet I set my Netgear router up to have the same MAC address as the cable modem. It worked fine after that. I think that was a proper cable modem router though not an ADSL type.

I STRONGLY recommend getting a proper cable router as the way you have it set up right now the internet is not being firewalled AT ALL. It is being treated as a LAN connection.

Once you get a cable router you should be able to pop the MAC address into the router on one of the setup screens when you log into it. Oh and the MAC address of the modem is usually on the underside.
