Does anyone know if you need an external aerial to get a TV card to work in a computer or could I use one of those mobile battery powered ones?

Depends on how strong the signal is where you are. Worked on a mobile one when I lived in Norwich, but the signal is too weak here in Nottingham so had to be the roof one...

If you're planning on some clever "I don't have a TV" style of TV licence evasion, be warned that the licence is for the equipment which receives the TV signal (i.e. the aerial!).

You'll still get a fine if they catch you. Smile

I say this because I can't think of a single reason to have a TV card.

I had a TV card initially to video edit. Then got another to replace my TV (the RF box went and I couldn't be bothered to fix it). Now I am back to the TV (using SKY so its in SCART not RF), and use my TV card for editing again.

Incidently when you purchase a TV card for a PC the shop that sells it to you is legally obliged to fill out a TV Licensing form to send to the licensing department to inform them of your name and address. (obviously buying second hand negates that).

Video editing? Copying video's onto your pc? Using a camcorder as a webcam?

Not as a webcam, but putting my camcorder stuff onto PC. I was fine till I left my job at One Step, there I have a Pinnacle DV 500 Suite at my disposal, after that I was down to my TV card... Still, lost my camcorder in a relationship split so it don't matter now... May invest in a DV camcorder if I find a decent quality one... Revise that, if I find money.
