I know that dealers are trying to make money and offer a short warranty, but the asking prices even of mid-90s bikes are often £1500-£2000.

Admittedly, they get more use, but cars of similar age are almost worthless and you can haggle a fair amount with some car dealers.

Are bike dealers asking prices extremely optimistic? Will they come down a lot with negotiation?

Not having bought from a dealer but having haggled anyway before buying private in my experience a dealer will be willing to move at least £50 or give you something like a helmet on top.

The logic is if somebody pays the sticker price they make more money , if somebody haggles then they make the price that they were really preparing to let the item go for.

When buying from a dealer, I've found it easier to get accessories thrown in. Top Box is usually a good one. They will be paying cost price anyway. So if a top box + rack is about £150 retail, it's probably £100 cost. They can write that off easier than asking for £500 off the price of a bike.

I picked up a pre-reg 58 plate Tenere for £4899. I also got the hard luggage (£550) thrown in. I would not have got a £550 discount on the price of the bike, so having them include the luggage was enough to sweeten the deal for me.

Most dealers will come to some kind of arrangment if you are nice and dont try to take the piss.

Thing about dealers is that they are now trapped with stock that was overpriced but sellable due to easy credit.

Now the recession has taken hold they are stuck and can't lower their margins by enough to actually make them a 'bargain'.

Thumbs Down

I bought my 07 Busa that was a cancelled order, 1 mile on the clock, for £6700 - 1700 down on list price cause it was the old shape, already registered, and it was effectivly a year old.
I tried pushing for extra's, but the salesman said said they were losing money on the bike and the only thing they would throw in was half price gap insurance. There comes a point they can't justify any further price reductions.

i wonder if bikes will become cheaper because of the crunch, the local yamaha dealer used to have loads of stuff in stock but now the front room is almost empty in comparison to before, you would struggle to look all around a bike as they were so close together but now you can stroll around them easily.

i doubt i'l buy from a dealer again, the idea that they are more reliable and in better condition no longer holds true for me now.

i havent noticed bike prices dropping too much at dealers or even ebay.

In fact it seems that prices on ebay, or is that the starting prices are going up....
Despite this not being the best time to sell a bike.

Looking for a certain bike now and they are going for what i consider very silly money for their age....
Stuff like a 20 year old bike going for £1300, yes it was in very good condition and had low milage and full service history... But at that price was not far of what it cost new.....

Might see a increase in the sunday power rangers bikes comming onto the market as they cannot keep them going, but as a whole i think that the 2nd hand bike market should buck the trend as running costs are low compared to other forms of transport.

just a thought, obviously the dealers need to make a profit, there are rumours around my way that the dreaded dk motorcycles make a grand on every part ex they take in. how true this is is obiously questionable, on a recent gander around their showroom they were cutting prices and offering incentives like free covers, discounts on clothing etc on certain bikes.

I'd noticed this too, although others disputed this. Last summer bikes were fetching similar or lower prices. I suspect that demand has increased for many of the pre-fuel injection, pre-catalyst, less thirsty bikes.

That's my point.
Of course, it is supply and demand -if a lot of people want the bikes, prices rise, although it will be interesting to see whether or not dealers start reducing their prices to shift their stock.

bike prices will only head north over the next few years due to the poor exchange rate on the pound.
new bikes are going to cost more bumping up the prices in the second hand market.
anyone want to buy a neglected 2002 636 a1p
or a very neglected t reg honda hornet
or a 500 miles on the clock cbr1000rr 2008 model?

Dealers can be cunts. https://www.jimhaymotorcycles.com/1021/frames.php this is an Aberdeen dealer trying to sell a 1974 suzuki RV125 for £2500 with 2400 miles on it, used to be trying £3000 when I was looking for a 125, not surprised he hasn't got rid of it one year later. Why? Because a Suzuki RV125 is what is now known as a VanVan. Scoot on over to Suzuki GB's brand new price of a VanVan (with there usual faggoty 1 years third party insurance) and what do I see? £2450! 50 quid less than this 35 year old bike, which I might add isn't a particularly sought after vehicle.

I felt I was ripped off at my local dealer as well, though I took it in the ass because I really, really wanted a TT600 in pristine condition and everywhere else had just sold the one they had in when I enquired. I got it for £300 less than they wanted, with a restrictor kit fitted and an MOT done the day before I picked it up. A seasoned haggler could have probably done better, but I was marginally proud of myself having paid "only" the top end of Parkers used price on that model.

Except they are not the same bike.

TBH I'm surprised he didn't manage to sell it for £3k if it's in above average condition.

What you are doing is comparing bikes that are different, bit like saying why spend £10k on a mint RC30 when you can get a 5 year old VFR800 for £3k.

Why are they cunts? The market will determine the value of a bike, not you.

Well in that case no one is ever ripped off? Unless they are at gunpoint.

Fair enough, I'm no expert in bikes, but I done a bit of research and couldn't find any info on the old RV's. I understand people wanting to buy old Vespa's for more than the new ones, even though it doesn't appeal to myself, but an old bike that isn't a cult/classic tends to seem like just an old bike. I will accept that I am wrong though.

EDIT: just found out the old one had a 2stroke engine, and feel foolish for not considering that point

Sometimes you can get a better deal than what they will offer you for cash by taking a finance deal then paying it off immediately (if the terms allow) - the dealer gets a kickback from the finance company.
