Okay, Bit of a long shot I know. But there is a possibility myself and a group of mates are doing a charity run this year on the Pit bikes.

We plan to ride from Landsend to John O'Groats. Crazy I know, But it will be a good laugh. And can be done in 4 or 5 days easily. We could do it quicker but we have a 50cc on the run that does 40mph flat out. Laughing

Anyway, I am wanting to tow a small trailer with me on the run. I can make the trailer myself, I saw one on Ebay a while ago, It was a road legal pit bike and Trailer for sale. I've lost the link though.

The trailer only had one wheel, A pit bike front wheel, obviously without the disk.

I believe the trailer must of leaned with the bike.

So, on the towing eye take off, Which I will bracket from the frame just above the rear shock mount. What Axis movement do I need?

Would I be able to use the design from one of these. But make it stronger.

Its either that or one of these, Which I dont think is capable of 850miles at an average of 40mph. Laughing

What are your ideas?

How much stuff are you carrying?

You can travel lighter than you may think.

Or another option would be to have someone in a van carrying your gear and some spares just incase.

Erm your bikes need to be 125cc+ to tow anything.,.

Ontop of that your trailer can only be 2/3 of the weight of your bike, and pit bikes are light , so you won't have any weight to put on it after you've built it...

My pit bike is 150cc. And will be pushing 20bhp by the time this trip comes around.

2/3 the weight. my bike is 60kg. Does that weight include myself, Or the bikes dry weight?

I think its supposed to be the 'unladen' weight. probably the kerb wet weight.

First design has various different ways of being made. More expensive/complex have rose joints. Generally they are just a one way joint around the seat stem. Proper ones have another linkage to allow up and down movement.

The lower on works by changing the rear skewer (axle) with a longer one and attatching a cart to the outside of the frame.

Both can easily take up to 30kg (usually the maximum rated by the manufacturers), though the two wheeled versions are normally rated up to 40-50kg.

Bearing in mind im going to need to carry a spare set of wheels with off road tyres pre-fitted, A set of spare bearings, A spare chain, Some decent Tools, Change of clothes, A Jerry can of petrol and some food.

I'd rather not carry all that on my back thanks.

Some pics of my pushbike trailer here:
https://gees.zenfolio.com/p630820744

There's a post on BCF somewhere, where I ask questions etc.
The design I went for slightly compromised steering for rear wheel grip (seeing that it was being used at Glastonbury). It worked well and was able to carry a pretty significant weight of stuff remarklably easily.

i think you'll be pushing your legal weight limits very easily, a 5gallon jerry can full of fuel will probably wegh around 20 kilos on it's own ...

before messing around building a trailer i suggest you get all the stuff you want to drag and add it's weight up, then consider how much the trailer is going to wegh and see how close you will be to your legal limits...

the next thing to consider will be stopping it from pushing you when you hit some of the bigger hills or just have to stop suddenly, a jack knife in an artic or car is no fun, just think how much more fun it could be on a tiny motorcycle...

i honestly would have a proper support vehicle to bung all the stuff in, along with the potential of chucking a bike or two in should things not go to plan

p.s.
a badly balanced/loaded trailer can make towing "interesting", i had a poorly loaded trailer (3/4 ton load) start snaking behind my car one day, it felt like it was going to lift my cars rear wheels off the floor Shocked

Not essential though, and neither is a change of clothes Laughing

I've done off-roading on supermoto tyres before and while it's been a lot more slidey, it's still possible.
Believe Mr Tattoo (who is undoubtably a lot more skilled than I) has taken a hornet down some of the greenlanes we often go down!
