Hi,

My bike won't start off the button, you'll press the starter button and nothing happens. It bumps ok, and all the electrics work ok. Anyone know what it is? Jammed starter motor or loose connection possibly?

I had to bump it to get it to work on time so I won't be able to have a proper look til I get home.

Any help would be great,

thanks,

Ben

Do you get a 'click' when you try the starter?

If so then the solenoid is definitely working.

Sure it's not the battery? Sometimes there can be enough power to run your lights etc but not to turn the engine over.

There isn't a click or anything, just the oil warning light flashes (does that normally when it starts)

Sounds like the solenoid may not be switching on then. Are all your fuses OK?

Checked my fuses earlier, they all appear to be ok.

Had a quick look and cleaned the connector going to the starter motor - all I could do before it got dark. I'll probably spend all day sunday on it.

Good shout, i'll look into that.

But if the sidestand is down when the bike is in gear it'll cut out, and it still rides fine.

Stick it in gear and rock back and forward. Does it turn over then ?
Yes, starter is sticking, easy fix.
No, could be the wiring as its catches a lot of crap. Check all the blocks and see if any have corroded pins in them.
Also try it with the clutch pulled in even in netural.

Some seem to have really weird wiring.

Mine will only start with the clutch in, cuts out when side stand in put down no matter what. Either in netural or in gear.

Before you start rebuilding the engine try checking the starter fuse isn't blown, it'll be in the starter relay, usually spare with it, 30amp.

Suggest possible battery to me. Trying the starter is pulling enough juice from the battery to kill everything else, and the bike thinks you just turned the key again when you release your thumb, so you see all the normal 'startup' lights again. You'd probably expect a click in this situation, but it's feasible that your environment is drowning this out, or the relay is buried deep enough that you just don't hear it (I know nothing of your bike)

To test, try the starter with your headlight on. If your light goes off when you try, it's probably the battery.

Have a look at the relays on the rear right hand side of the bike underneath the tail plastics, make sure all wires are intact, corrosion free etc. My brother had this problem on his diversion.

Turns out my starter solenoid had broken!

So the starter motor is now operated by switch as a temporary measure whilst the new one is ordered.

Cheers for your help and suggestions. Thumbs Up

Finally got round to buying another solenoid - second hand.

Still nothing. Maybe try a new one? or could it be something else?

does the bike click when you push the button? it should repeatedly click if everything is working ok. this would mean that your battery is dead. take the battery down to garage and they can test it for you. usually for free. if not find a garage that does it for free. if you have a multimeter measure the voltage across it. should read ~12V

Edit: rereading through your post did the bike start on the button when you used the temporary switch? if so then check all the wiring going to the starter. has the button broke?

There is no click, and the button appears to be working ok, but i'll probably be replacing the whole switchgear as I broke the casing.

Bike starts fine if you connect the wires that would have gone into the solenoid.

then that rules out dead battery.
check all your electrical components with an multimeter as cracks/breaks can be easy to miss

How would one go about fixing this problem? My XJ's done this ever since I bought it! Its a minor inconvenience, but if its easy to fix i'm all ears.
