Another thread from a mechanical retard...

If I were to buy a bike with Ohlins suspension front and back what would be the cost/maintenance implications compared with the stock suspension you get with most bikes.

It wouldn't make any difference. To get the best from any suspension it should be rebuilt once a year or so (more so if it's being used on track). That's in an ideal world. Most people never bother.

It also depends if the bike is a Yamaha or not.

If it is a Yamaha (XJR1300 for example) they actually own Ohlins as a company and so they often paint their ordinary shocks gold and stick Ohlins stickers on 'em because they can.

If it is a Mille R or something, then I'd go and buy it. I wouldn't care about how much it costs to replace the oil in the suspension, there are far more important things to consider. Like mileage, condition and the tart value of genuine Ohlins.

It actually was regarding the suspension that comes with the Mille R, just did not want to start another thread with people moaning about why get a V-twin when you could have an IL4.

Over the past few weeks I have gone from wanting another 636 to a Ducati, ZX10R, and now I am thinking of an Aprlilia...

Only thing you have to watch out for on the Millie R is the forks - if they don't get used for a while (a few months) the seals can dry up and start to leak. To stop this all you should need to do is either go out on it or bounce the forks a few times to keep the seal lubricated. They need a special tool to remove the top of the forks which costs quite a bit and looks to be fairly complicated inside, so a lot of people send the forks off to have maintenance (oil change, seal replacement) done on them.

They are 'proper' Ohlins. But they're bottom of the barrel sh1te. Although they're meant to be good when regassed and serviced. I'll be putting Hagon Nitros' on mine when I have the spare cash.
