If I pasted over a small pinhole on the downpipe with Gun Gum.

Halfords describe it as a "permanent" fix for pinholes. I know this is cock, but would it pass the MOT? If they would pick it up should I paste the whole downpipe, smooth it down and paint the exhaust with High Temp enamel? As a sneaky coverup?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice. Thumbs Up

Chemical metal might give a more permanent fix than gun gum. Question depending how big the hole is.

Open the hole up a bit more and stick a pop rivet in it Laughing

Mate I had an exhaust system patched here, there and everywhere with bits of metal sheet, exhaust paste and jubilee clips ... as long as it's gas tight it should pass Thumbs Up

My Bandit had a gap all around the downpipe to link pipe. Just put gum gum and some tape around it - passed Thumbs Up

Mine passed even though it was blowing out of one of the pipes....

Its repaired with beans tins and plenty of exhaust bandage underneath to seal it.
Still leaks a bit and the guy commented on the quality of the fix. Something along the lines of a "Bodgers delight" Laughing Adding its not too loud so it will be ok Thumbs Up

Gum Gum tends to last not long at all.

a bit of exhaust paste, a strip of baked bean tin and two jubilee clips the night before you take it for mot ....

the exhaust won't fail then

i usually scrounge my paste from one of the local exhaust shops when i pass them (kwik fit etc) you won't need much , just ask a fitter for an old tub

if the exhaust isnt blowing or excessively noisy or insecure at the time of test..should be fine.If the tester is in any doubt,he should just add it to the advisory notice. Thumbs Up

A blowing exhaust is not an MOT fail unless the noise produced is considered excessive or if it adversely affects the structure of the exhaust. Thumbs Up

I used plumbing sealant on my CB450DX after I dropped it and damaged the exhaust. Worked a treat and passed the MOT no probs despite looking ugly(yes even uglier than an undamaged CB450DX Laughing ).

Sorry to bump this thread, but can anyone confirm this. I've found a very small hole in my exhaust was was looking at patching it. It's 1-2mm wide and about 15mm long and the bike has to go in for a MOT. It doesn't sound like it's blowing and apart from a small amount of water that drips from it as the pipe is cooling, you wouldn't know it's there (it's on the underside).

Thanks

Drew

Get yourself off to Wilkos, spent £2 on their exhaust tape and don't worry about it.

It's a very rustic (should that read rusty?) drain hole if it is one. I'll go take a pic.

EDIT:

Here's the pic.

No, you're right, that's not a drain hole.

For an MOT it doesn't matter if a repair is visible, as long as it does the job and is secure/safe. Even exhaust bandage from Halfords may do.

Thats what I'm thinking. It's an old bike so I don't really want to be spending £300 on new cans just yet. (bike only cost me £700!)

Cheers! Thumbs Up

If you want a get-you-by fix for that get some thin ally sheet and cut a long patch out of it about 50mm wide. Smear gungum all along that gap then poprivet one side of the patch, roll it over the gungum and rivet the other side. It's a bodge but it should last quite some time. Don't cover up any drain holes.

it is not correct.

Quote:
EXHAUST SYSTEM

The decibel level will be assessed at the discretion of the tester, other checks are:

The exhaust mountings must be secure and not fouling any part of the rear suspension
The exhaust must not be holed and free from leaks from both joints and box(es)
Replacements units, other than bikes registered before 01.Jan.1985, must have the BSAU 193 stamp

taken from https://www.ukmot.com/bike_basics.asp

there is no reason why the exhaust cant be repaired.

Thought not... it sounded a bit odd when I read it. Looks like I'll be repairing it then!
