Hi all,

Just wondering if the Suzuki RMX250 uses a valve system like the RM250 or a valve system like the RGV250 and Rg125f? I just wondered as I know that people have a lot of problems with valves dropping on the RGV250/RS250 and was wondering if the RMX250 also experiences these problems?

RGV250/RS250/Rg125f Valve (3/2 stage system):

RM250 Valve (single blade similiar to the Aprilia Rs125s motor and Cagiva Mitos motor):

Thanks in advance,
Jack

I don't know about the RM or the RMX, but I would have thought if they were the same I would have heard about it, being an ex RGV owner. I looked everywhere for info before I bought it, and I didn't hear anything about the RGV being similar to any Suzuki off roaders.

The RGV is also quite peaky whereas I know the RMX has lots of low down punch. Plus the RM/RMX are singles whereas the RGV is a twin.

In short, I can't say for certain but I'd be surprised if the RMX had the same kind of power valve as the RGV.

The rg125f is a single and uses the same valve system as the RGV250. I hope it doesn't have the same system as the RGV250.

OK here's how it works.

The RGV250 is not much more than 2 RG125 motors welded together. The RMX on the other hand is not a 125cc single, or a 250cc twin, it is a 250cc single.

From these facts we can derive that the engine design on the RMX250 is somewhat different from the RGV and therefore powervalve problems should not surface.

The reason why RG125 and RGV250s have the same problem is because they are pretty much the same thing.

as marjay has said basically,
the rmx uses a similar system to the rm, but is different using a 2 peice power valve set up to the rmx's 3 peice,
apparently the 93 rm 250 2 peice system may work, but you'll lose some of the low down power that the rmx has

https://www.bikebandit.com has microfiches online of both bikes

The RMX250 has the same (similar) AETC valve system as the RGV250/Rg125f according the microfiches on the site that hmmmnz posted. The main difference being that it is driven mechanically on the RMX and not electronically as in the RGV250. The valve system looks the same 3 bladed design and in that sense it should experience the same valve dropping problems as the RGV250.

Not necessarily. The RGV has a V twin, whereas the RMX is a single. If it is an exhaust valve and the centre pin were to fail, the middle section would simply fall into the exhaust.

Secondly, the RGV centre pin on the three bladed valve was a rolled bit of sheet steel. As such it was susceptible to rust and corrosion. A solid centre pin, or one machined into the blades of the valve would not fail in the same way.

I'm certain that these problems are perculiar to the RGV/RG and any bikes that have the same engine. It doesn't even affect VJ21 RGVs, just the Mk2 VJ22 models. the VJ23 has a different engine altogether.

I would be really really surprised if the RMX is similarly afflicted.

Cheers again Marjay, makes clarity out of the confusion I had over the matter. As you could probably tell I'm looking into getting one and the valve problem was sort of turning me off the bike a bit. But it definately seems to look like a more viable option for me again now.

Speaking to a long term rmx250 owner (owned the bike from new since 1998) he says the RMX250 DO experience the same valve dropping problems as the rgv250 vj22 (and other similar AETC valved machines). They go in the same way as the rgv's as there construction is similar as I'd initially thought they did.

Hi guys here is the facts
i own both an rgv vj22 as a track bike and rmx as a dirt bike and having rebuilt both engines i can confirm that the top design of both engines powervalves is identical appart from the rmx being larger , both 3 blade etc both with the rolled steel pin both placed into the exhaust port exactly the same (to the stage that the first rebuild of the rmx i got a set of rgv ones out in hope as they look identical that is untill you put them next to each other and see how much larger the rmx ones are. The differences are in the actuation, rmx being mechanical rgv being electrical via cable.

as a footnote the earlier rgv's had a 2 blade valve of a similar design and the Rm's have a 2 blade design powervalve

cheers
