As of Monday, amendments to the Counter Terrorism Act will make it illegal to photograph the police, if the product of the photography is "likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism".

Because we keep catching them on camera doing illegal things , say beating up innocent people , making up laws on the spot, telling lies in court , driving outside of the law when not on an emergency , parking on double yellows/disabled spots/zig zag lines , threatening and intimidating people...

Catching them on film doing the above makes the public lose confidence in a severe manner.

And instead of doing something hard and decent such as having proper oversight like the HK ICAC which is effective (why 98% of people have confidence in police) or the CCDI in China which is known to put corrupt cops in front of firing squads.

The UK government have taken the easy option instead and think that they can win back our confidence by preventing the corruption from being filmed or pictures being taken. Ie if we don't see it happen and there are no videos on Youtube, then most people will think that police corruption doesn't occur.

Maybe if people hadn't made such a point about it "hahah we can film you, and you can't do fuck all about it" to wind up the fuzz, then posting it on youtube/flickr etc.

This is purely to stop the police, consistently losing face on camera, they now have legislation to back them up.

Bad news, but definately a product of people pushing the limits.

Pushing the limits? What limits? These people work for us, and by all rights are FAR more deserving of 24/7 surveillance than the average citizen.

No arguments here, fuck them. I have zero respect for the modern day police service.

But stick a camera in the average persons face and see how long they tolerate it. We treat the police as they are some kind of superbeings, completely infallible. Of course, arguably they should be, but the reality is (and proven time after time) they are just minority group and graduate muppets, just as prone to losing their rag as the next person.

They invent some legislation to stop them looking so fucking hopeless, what a surprise eh?

Erm, I fail to see how filming the police fucking about, lying, committing offences themselves is pushing the limits. They chose to be a police 'officer' Wink and so they chose to adhere to the law and be responsible, if they screw up and they get filmed or photographed doing it then who the hell are they to complain. If they can't do their job properly then they shouldn't be doing it at all.

A law like this would not stop me from photographing police and it shouldn't stop anyone else, how are they going to prove that it is of help to terrorists? If all the video shows is a copper and his related fuckup then pictures of coppers are available anywhere so that's not new and him fucking up is of no concern to terrorists.

There's a point where all these so called laws get so ridiculous they're not worth adhering to, this is one of them, there'll be lots more. Besides how does this law work when it comes to CCTV cameras, they'll be filming the police all the time, so does that make every CCTV operator a criminal.

That's the joy of 'terrorism' - it's SUCH a non-specific threat that it can be twisted however suits people best. You can always come up with an incredibly weak justification for bringing anti-terrorism legislation into play. And once you've done that you've got carte blanche to do whatever the law allows (which, these days, seems to be quite a lot).

Funnily enough I watched (the latest live action version of) Animal Farm last night.

In some ways it was more powerful then the cartoon one, because it really did lay on the sickening warping of facts to mislead the proles.

Rang a lot of bells sadly.

As has been very astutely noted, police used to be able to get away with everything, now they are getting filmed and they are finding it hard to do their job 'properly'. Bah, I give up with this country.

Could you still take pics which don't identify them? Like their crotch/arse/tits/back of the head.

Surely that would be ok, and REALLY annoying. Smile

The following ratios were compiled using data from 2004 National Safety Council (NSC) Estimates, a report based on data from The National Center for Health Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau. In addition, 2003 mortality data from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) was used.

How about we make it illegal to take photos of terrorists and turn our attention on the police, from the statistic above it would certainly make us safer.

Very Happy

Unfortunately I think the government are going to try to reverse this trend.

Nail. Head. Squarely struck.
Whilst the sensationalists would have us believe that anyone taking a picture with a copper in it is going in for a ten year stretch, the reality of the situation is quite different.
Coppers are just people, and like all people there are those who are good (at their jobs) and bad. Whilst i can forsee 'bad' coppers using this legislation(incorrectly) to attempt to conceal their actions, i look forward to those coppers being challenged and shown to be wrong.
