Quote:
A woman trapped upside down in a sinking car was rescued by a taxi driver who ignored warnings from the emergency services that it was too dangerous for him to enter the freezing water.

James Brown, 41, was driving along an icy road shortly before midnight on Tuesday when he spotted the headlights of a Ford Ka half-submerged in a duck pond in Bishop Burton, East Yorkshire.

Inside was Caroline Saunders, 28, a social worker, who had skidded on black ice and lost control of her car. The car had crashed through a fence and flipped on to its roof before landing in the water, leaving her trapped inside.

Mr Brown did not realise that anyone was still in the car until he dialled 999 on his mobile phone and began speaking to a fire service controller. Only then did he spot Miss Saunders inside the upside-down vehicle.

Though the controller at the other end of the phone urged him not to risk his life by attempting a rescue, Mr Brown said he could see that the car was filling with water.

He decided that the emergency services would not reach the scene in time.

“Another ten minutes and she would have died. I put down the phone and went in. It was sinking down and half the car was underwater already,” he said.

“I could see someone screaming and banging on the window. It was like a scene from a horror film.”

The door was jammed and the window would not open so, after trying to reassure the terrified Miss Saunders, he flagged down a motorist, who found a hammer in the back of his car.

Mr Brown, who is from Beverley, said: “I went back with it. I shouted to her and she said she was the only one in the car. I was just so relieved that she was talking to me. I smashed the window. There were still bits of glass in the frame, which I picked out by hand before dragging the girl out. She was very shaken up, but at least she got out.”

Mr Brown, a self-employed taxi driver for the past six years, who has one child, carried Miss Saunders from the pond and put her in his car with a blanket around her. She was then taken to hospital and treated for shock, cuts and bruises.

Miss Saunders, who was on her way home from work when the accident happened, said that she had felt certain that she was going to die.

“It’s midnight, there’s no one around and I’m stuck and I can’t get out,” she said. “I saw some headlights and I was beeping my horn, banging on the window, thinking, ‘Please have seen me, please have seen me’.”

After being discharged from hospital she was able to meet Mr Brown again and thank him. A fire service spokesman said that Mr Brown had performed an exceptional rescue.

Someone buy that man a pint or several.

Good to hear there are still a few decent people left

He picked bits of glass out of the frame before dragging her out? So it was already resting on it's roof on the bottom and was going to sink no further. And he was standing up in it. He sure as hell wouldn't have been swinging a hammer fast or hard enough under water to break glass with it either, so the car wasn't even deep enough to cover all the glass...thus resting on it's roof (unless anyone's ever seen a car floating upside-down in water so high parts of it's windows are still exposed...what was it made out of, polystyrene?).

Heeerooo.

What a crock.

I'm guessing it was on its side; "flipping onto its roof" is the usual sloppy journalism which makes fat women "curvaceous", shagging into "romps", lab rats into "boffins" and politicians into "greasy-handed lying sacks of shite".

OK, so the last one was mine, but you get the idea...

It was probably a large puddle, if it was a pond it would've been reported as a lake. It does sound like the pond was probably only about 3ft deep so I think the part about the car sinking was unlikely. To be honest, a car upside down (could've been resting on it's side) in 3ft of cold water with a woman screaming stuck inside, doesn't take the last action hero to walk in and get her out.

Nail on the head there. Especially as he went back for a hammer.

Oh well, glad people are ignoring the emergency services health and safety crafted bullshit.

Agreed.

Where does the article mention hero? This isnt the daily mail. Ok, some of the comments posted in reply are over the top.

He just did the decent thing, and put himself out a bit to help out. The same thing anyone with half a conscience would do. Not particularly newsworthy.

What is newsworthy is the disgraceful lack of gritting that occured over the entire 2 weeks, local councils ought to be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Many such accidents would never have occured.

People in the UK havent a fucking clue how to drive on ice and snow, but in typical stiff upper lip stupidity they try anyway, and then we get this. Rolling Eyes

The fact that he actually got out to help is good enough. Most people just watch and walk past in this country when it comes to accidents

nobodys putting him down

We just find it funny reading the hyped report of how he LEPT from his car ripped off his shirt revealling his rugged 6 pack and huge abbs then shouting in a deep manly voice never fear taximan is here. He then heroicly leapt into the deep dark icy lake where many have ventured but never returned. On arriving at the car he realising the window was inpregnable so ventured off to get backup on returning to the road he stopped an oncoming car using just his chest hair and retreived the hammer of THOR and returned to the dame in distress in one big swing he destroyed the inpregnable window freeing the dame and they all live happy ever after

WHAT REALLY HAPPEND

Seen some retard who couldnt drive in the ice had flipped there car upside down in 3" of water. Deceided to go an see if they were dead and get some picks for rotten.com. So i walked out an got my feet wet. Found some stupid bitch in car who wouldnt wind down the window so tryed to kick the window in but it hurt my already fucking freezin toes. So went to find something to break the window i got back to the road to get seen some pikey coming and knew hed have a weapon of some sort so flagged him down and borrowed his hammer. I went and smashed the window but the bitch still wouldnt get the fuck out till i removed all the glass. Finnally got her out and back to my car and tyed her up in a blanket and was just about to punch her in the tits and do her up the gary but the plod came Ahh well better luck next time Mr. Green Thumbs Up
