I saw a pedboi riding with a carrier bag on his head, don't think I'll bother personally.

No, you don't. Some peeps use them to protect their eyes from the wind and any flying stone chips, etc.

If you get an open face lid, get one that has at least a short visor.

Found this if anyone cares

Helmet Law
If you ride a motorbike or a moped in the UK you must wear a safety helmet. Really?.... you ask. But did you know there are also other requirements that tie in with this. Below is a few things you might not have known.

Legally:

1) The strap must be done up.
2) It must fit properly.
3) It must be an approved safety helmet. It'll either display a BS6658 sticker on the outside, or an EC approval mark somewhere inside. Only BS 6658 types A & B or EC Regulation 22 type 05 series are legal in the UK.

Visor Law
Unlike helmets wearing a visor or goggles isn't a legal requirment but as soon as you use one a whole new bunch of rules apply to you.

Legally

1) It must be an approved visor / goggle It'll either have a BS4110 mark or the new EC Regulation 22 type 05 mark.

2) A 50% tint is the darkest you're allowed by law and even then it will be marked "for daylight use only". Dark, mirrored etc. visors are illegal, wear sunglasses instead.

Documentation
Click here to go the the Department for Transport page on helmet and visor regulations.

I got pulled a couple of years ago riding my dt125, police reckoned if you wear a moto x helmet it's illegal if you dont have goggles with you as well......

Did'nt believe them but didnt argue because at the time they where trying to say they had me on cctv doing wheelies.

I used to ride a GT 250 when I was 17, open face helmets were the norm then. They are a bloody nightmare at any decent speed. Flies, bees, greenfly etc. either smacking you in the chops or going in your eye. God help you if you got hit by a flying stone!

They had peaks on as well, felt like your head was being ripped off backwards above 70.

Either stick with full face or wear goggles is my top tip of the day Smile

Better still, get yourself a car if you want to be a big wuss about it. Do you wear a bag over your head when you go to the beach in case a bit of sand gets in your eye? Course not, live a little, its the sense of risk and rush of adrenalin that makes it worthwhile.

Worse thing I've had with an open helmet was a hailstorm. Fricking hurt, I didn't even have the intelligence to just pull over.

hehe ...
I hate openface helmets anyway.
But only cos I think I look like a dork.

First one I ever wore belonged to my Italian mother in law (when she used to ride a ped to work) ... it was bright red, and made me look like a was wearing a cherry on my head Rolling Eyes

It's not a legal requirement to wear goggles but at anything above 50mph the wind blasting into your eyes becomes quite uncomfortable.

I got caught in a hailstorm in an open faced lid on a dual carridgeway in the recent bad weather. Not overly pleasant! Rain is the same - feels like being pricked with needles repeatedly all over your face. The trick I use is to wrap a scarf around your face, but in reality a full face lid is a much better bet for bad weather.

Those german-army ones that Americans have taken to wearing look like a load of shyte, evolved from stupid Harley riding accountants in the US trying to look like original Brits wearing pisspots.

The only time I ever saw a proper amusing "german army" style bike helmet was when I saw someone wearing an ACTUAL one, with a spike on.

Or you wanna get yourself one of these...

Personally I'd never go for an open face helmet 'cos I'm too much of a wuss.

Then again having your jaw broken in two places and having to hold it in place while you drink so you don't swallow it... will do that ya...

Sand in eye at beach vs 70mph stone chip to your iris

Sound analogy
