Who's had any experience with one of these?

I'm looking at getting a bike again but would rather pick one up under the £2k mark. The ZX7R is a bike I've always liked and I wouldn't mind getting one.

Just wanted to hear about any positives/negatives with them. Am I likely to get anything good under £2k?

I believe Yellow Ninja still has his for sale on here. Maybe worth a PM?

Mate got one last summer from a dealer priced at 2200 knocked him down to 1600. Lowish milage (25k) but great nick apart from original system had pinholed.

Power from pretty much everywhere including low down.
Slightly weighty(stable?) but quick enough.

Good fun, alot of options still available for them.
Recently voted one of the "best bikes for British roads" by a repsected bike mag.

What do you want out of a bike?

You should get a very good one for £2k, in fact i wouldn't want to pay any more than that for one.

Pretty much the perfect sports bike for the road imo. Only real critisism (apart from the weight which, to be fair is a double edged sword) is that you have to man handle them a bit to get them to turn at high speed.

i had one, you should get a nice one fot 2k, they are heavy and "big" but thats what i loved about it, if you stick it into a corner, it's like its on rails, it's got enough grunt to keep up with most newer bikes too! big service is at 16k (i think)

Sounds good so far. Smile

All out fun really. See previous bikes in signature. I love the look of them more than anything. The weight was something I was concerned with but the stability thing seems a good tradeoff.

What's considered high mileage on one?

I wouldn't worry too much about the weight.
I've had tank slappers on my ZXR (the blueprint for the later ZX7R) that if I had been on a lighter bike, R6 or similar I'm sure WOULD have thrown me.

Not only that but the weight starts to disapear at speed.
Raise the rear slightly to help with the turn in speed and it becomes alot better bike.

It's got all out fun all over it. You'll enjoy it. Red and black is best!.

Engines are pretty much bullet proof. I'd consider high milage at 40k+ but with proper scheduled maintainence they'll go on to 60/70K

How would one compare to a similarly priced ZX6R?

Unfortunately couldn't offer a valid opinion on that as I've not ridden the zx6 range.

Only just noticed this thread.

The ZX7R was the first 'big' bike I bought after my ZXR400. It was pretty daunting when I picked it up. Obviously loads more power, bigger and it was so uncomfortable I was aching after 50 miles.

However, after getting used to it I absolutely loved it. Fast enough to keep up with everything bar the latest thous in a straight line, and the front end is incredibly stable. I've hooned, commuted and toured on mine it's been pretty much perfect for what I wanted, and it's one my favourite looking sportsbikes ever. Since getting used to the seating position I now find it really comfy, and toured France & Spain doing 300 miles a day and had no aches or pains at all.

Downside, the front brakes are pretty toss, but sintered pads and braided lines do help a little.

I have two 7Rs and both of them have been amazingly reliable. The only thing apart from normal maintance that I've had to buy is a clutch for the P5 I have, that was at about 20k miles.

I'm selling my P6 on ebay at the moment if you're interested. I did want £2.5k for it, which I thought was a fair price for a fairly low mileage 2002 model, but since I binned the 10R and have some big financial commitments coming up I've put it on at £2k no reserve. Clicky to auction

Compared to the 6r J2, its feels far more planted in the corners with what feels like a phenomenal amount of grip at the front and they do corner fantastically Twisted Evil

Have never ridden a 6r B1, but reckon they would be on a par, other than the rear shock on the non 'H' variety of zxr/ZX7 is not as severe. Probably even slightly faster as the 750 probably has more torque, if not a lot more power.

Some people think that they are uncomfortable, but covered 300+ miles in a day one time and it was prefectly bareable.

Best run I had on mine was following Rhino and Davy on their B1s, Sad never got out on it enough *sigh

Keep looking at them and thinking that I need to get one again, but the 600 is easier on the pocket, which when I commute on it, matters - maybe I just need to sell the Z1100 and get one that way Thinking

They can be thirsty buggers, especially compared to the 600s, but they are gorgeous Cool

Stupidly the two pots on earlier zx7's were miles better.
I believe on the zx9 they used 3 pots then went back to 2 pots on later revisions.

The 7R was a fantastic bike for me despite the odd little glitches to be expected with a 10 year old bike. Yep, the twin pots on the ZXR were so much better than the brakes on the 7R.

Whoring opportunity...

The bike may have been superseded in so many ways by newer and smaller cc bikes but they in my mind they are a rapidly becoming a classic sportsbike with looks that haven't dated that much.
