Well, it's just been a shit week for me on the bike.

Last weekend went out for a blast with my mate to his folks house. We get there and the half mile track leading downhill to their house was covered in snow.....no problem....took it slow.

Getting up the hill was different, come round a turn and just lost the back end, dropped the bike at about 5mph - fairing a little out of shape.

Get back to Aberdeen and stop at the scrappys (persleys - Danestone), I do a U-turn to park the bike, front gets all light, I can't stop....bike goes down again (twice in an hour!!) fuck!

Yesterday took a run out to my sisters.....going past the same scrappys (bit of 50MPH dual carridgeway going up a hill)

Lorry up ahead in Lane 1, so I do my checks, signal, check again and give her some gas for the overtake. Next thing I know the bike is revving like its in neutral (I'm in third) the backend swings round to my left.....i ease off the throttle and the bike snapped back around, next thing I know the bike is shaking from side to side and the handlebars are wobbling like fuck (I've had a bit of sideways and a wobble before...but NOTHING as bad as this).

I honestly thought I was coming off. Now I'm a little bit paranoid, and I don't want this paranoia to stick. Guess I'd better get out this weekend and knock the shit out of some corners.

5 months riding and now dropped twice, I suxxors.

Last one sounds like a bit of diesel or oil.
Tyres nearly ready for replacing?
Would give more confidence if you replaced them especially rear.

To be honest, not sure on the tyre. Bought the bike brand new on September 1st and have done 4700 miles since then. Surely a tyre would last longer than that or is it because I'm a total noob that I may have screwed my tyre a bit quicker than normal?

It depends what tyre it is and how he rides.

Kittykat gets upwards of 20,000 miles from tyres.

this is a little OT and no disrespect to the OP but having read a few threads recently... In 9 months of riding, I have only lost complete control once (when I crashed into a car) and partially lost control on ice twice, but apart from that, never locked the rear, never spun it up, never done anything !!!

I ride spiritedly (that is how it was described by an advanced instructor) but I also ride conservativly, so my advice is take it easy, smooth and steady.

Happened to me at uni, had the bike on choke whilst riding off, gently let on the power and the back end stepped out big time - 30mph; mates saw me get pinged out of my seat... IN that instance, road was wet, lots of plant equipment had been using the road so there was not only mud, but diesel and gravel. So chances are oil or loose surface is to blame.

What tyres do you have and what bike?

My advice is to just always keep an eye on road surface conditions and traffic conditions. If you fail to plan or compensate for stuff like that, you'll end up stacking your bike big time - i thought i was an experienced rider having been on bikes continuously for 4 years... A wet, greasy roundabout on the A1 put a huge dent in my confidence when i wrecked my ZX6R. Just try to plan and anticipate - experience will only come with time, and to be honest with you, riders will make their fair share of mistakes, their confidence will slump. It's all part of a learning curve. I learnt the hard way. For those who haven't had any accidents, be it through no fault of their own or just out of their own stupidity; they're just pure lucky... and to me, that's dangerous because it makes them feel invincible!

ajb, if you've only lost control once, then they'll be a time when you probably will; probably through no fault of your own, especially as you ride "spiritedly". It's more often than not the "home stretch" that causes the most accidents!" I though i was smooth, quick and competent, but man, arrogance doesn't half pay its price! I was humbled by a lowly roundabout when I least expected it:up: Karma

I've had my fair share of moments of hard braking etc, I can't say I'm a speed freak, because I'm not, I think the key to it is as I was told by the instructor, good forward planning can pretty much cover 90% of problems that will arise, by taking it easy in that respect, you can be a 'quicker' rider, without rushing things. Thumbs Up

In reply to the other sensible posts......bike is an FZ6 Fazer and the tyres are Bridgestone Battlax Br20. It was dark and wet that night, does make it hard to see the road surface.

Will be getting some new tyres when I get paid. Speaking of which, any reccomendations?

I don't do track days (next year maybe!) so commuting and fast road use. I have heard Michelan Pilots are really good, anyone got any sugegstions?

Tyres - Dunlop Roadsmart... do a search on dunlop + roadsmart in the search function and you can see most of the posts are mine! Cool

I've had them fitted to the ZX6R and also on the Blade. I've got 4000 miles on the 6R before i sold it and it had a good 4k left. Very good tyres, fast warm up times, good wet grip. It'll be a good choice for your fazer, considering i've got it fitted onto a 125bhp blade.

I hate bridgestones - very wooden, no feel, takes ages to warm up, very twitchy; I had BT014's - hated them. I had BT020's, hated them even more. I could have got 7k out of them, but replaced them at 4k when they were squared off! Still had a good 2-3mm tread left in them, but they offered me NO feedback whatosever.

So, dunlop roadsmarts as per my recommendation. Pirelli diablo stradas as per Craigs23's recommendations, and a fair few would recommend michelin pilot road 2's. can't go wrong with any of them; just depends whether you want a british, french or italian tyre! I suggest you do a magazine search for roadsmarts since it trumped the Pilot road 2 - i think theDonUk will want to slag off dunlops in favour for his michelins.

But on a serious note, experience only comes with time and exposure; and yeah, it's a learning curve none-the-less.

Agreed, I've been getting 8000 miles from my rears, I just moved to BT020/021 front/rear combination and after 2,500 miles the rear is just starting to square off.

I'm really enjoying the level of grip they're giving me, but mine's a weighty v-twin and I guess it puts the torque down in a different way to an in-line 4.

Bad news on the spills, but with the kind of weather you've had recently I'm not surprised you dropped it twice even at slow speed. Thumbs Up

ever think of maybe just answering the fucking question without getting on your high horse? I'm a fairly new rider and know next to fuck all about bike tyres, as far as I can see it's still got plenty of tread and doesn't seem to have been 'squared' hence the question.

One wonders if this is another forum full of elitist fuck wits who assume others know everything they do....honest to god. It's eithier that or you have a chip on shoulder cos you know your a cunt and everyone else knows your a cunt too, and think acting like a cunt is the only way to continue.

Indeed, cetainly a lot to learn and learn even more everytime I get on the bike.

Alas, I have no frame of reference when it comes to tyres or even general handling as this is my first bike. So it's a major learning curve at the minute...I have no idea what constitues 'good handling' I guess the more I get to experience different bikes I'll be able to get a better understanding.

Shall certainly read more on those tyres and see where that takes me. Cheers dude.

Just to chime in with Titz's comment, get rid of the 020s asap, they don't give nearly enough feedback in cold wet conditions. I had a couple of comedy rear end slides on the pair my Futura came fitted with as well, thankfully no drops at least Smile
