What a gorgeous looking motor - but what is it with 'bikes like this (Honda's SP etc etc etc) that makes them so WIIIIIIDE? They're inline V-twins for crying out loud! Yet they're almost as wide as any 'four' you'd care to name!

The SP1/2 has the largest pistons of any vehicle honda have ever made... large = wide.

Hi

They are not that wide, but it is not that easy to make them narrow. With an inline 4 you have a load of space above the gearbox to stick the alternator and the starter motor. With the twins you have a cylinder trying to occupy some of that space, so the alternator lands up on the end of the crank.

I would doubt that an RSV engine is anything like as wide as an R1, for example.

Piston width is not that important. For example a Ducati 996 has a 98mm piston, while an R1 has a 77mm bore. For width the Ducati has a single piston in a line (cos the other is behind it), but the R1 has 4 side by side. 996 pistons total width - 98mm, R1 = 244mm.

All the best

Keith

you've surely posted this after popping back a few tinnies after work . . . Wink

I'm sure John Britten, RIP, would've had something to say about your other comments too - the widest thing on his famous 'bike (other than the bars etc) was the back tyre.

Hardly a road bike though. May as well compare it to an RCV.

All the best

Hi

Think they did sell some for the road, but not really a road bike.

All the best
