MOT - Free MOT for life from Dobles - Suspect!

Took the bike in for its MOT today, took it to dobles as when i bough the bike i got a voucher that entitles you to Free MOT's for life.
So took it in, came back 40 minutes later, showed the voucher when he said the cost (which i think was £25 or £28 quid! which is cheaper than i though it was) and he said, " ahh great . . . you should show that before the bike goes in for an MOT, it makes a BIG difference". Me being stupid just said "oh ok" and did not ask why, but on the return i was thinking why? why is it such a difference, will they make something wrong with it so it fails, or will they be over fussy? . . . anyone else got one of these vouchers or heard of anything surrounding these vouchers and MOT's?
Also, slightly side stepping the topic, my temp gauge read over halfway (nearer the H) now it never usually gets that hot unless im ragging it and i wasnt, so im also suspect on whether the mechanic took it for a ragging session.

If the bikes been run while stood in a workshop then it would get fairly hot, especially if it's an NSR, they dont have fans do they? No idea on the MOT thing

Go back and ask them what the big difference is, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I always make it 100% clear that whatever it fails on i'll be fixing myself. It gives them less incentive to fail it on something borderline or even make a job.

i never leave my bikes for an mot i stand and watch over there sholder never had any problems with them creating faults or thrashing my bikes they dont get to even sit on it

Where i go they weigh the front/back of the bike then i sit on and he connects it to a brake machine and i apply the brakes

I reckon its a bit of a con. If they know that they are performing an MOT for free then they are more likely to find something to fail it on, so they have a chance of charging you for some work or there will be a catch like the MOT is free, but a subsequent re-test isn't. That way they will get some payment out of you regardless. Thats my theory.

If I were you then I would do one of two things next year. Either rip the voucher up and use somewhere else for MOT's and forget this bunch of clowns, or go back to Dobles book your bike in as per normal and say nothing about the voucher again until the MOT is done. Unless it says on there somewhere that you have to present the voucher before the MOT, sod them. If they start to moan again that you should have told them you had a voucher etc you can tell them to

I bought a car once that had this deal but it only applied if we had it serviced by them. I just did my own servicing and took it elsewhere. I agree it does sound like the free MOT is a tool for capturing work.

My dad did a similar thing with a half price M.O.T on his car. It passed without any advisories.

It could just be an honest promotion to try and get more business.

I am also very suspicious about it. I think next year I will go else where, and stay to watch the MOT be carried out too. Its only 40 odd quid once a year i suppose.
I wouldnt be so concerned if they were happy for it to be presented afterwards but to say it makes such a difference to show it first is a little bit suspicious to me.

i take my bike to a car garage who just happen to do bike MOT's but they dont fix bikes at all.

that way they seem to give me fair traetment as theres nothing in it for them to fail it as retest is free... in fact probably more of an incentive for them to let something minor slip through.

Luckily we have a couple local independent mechanics who do MOT's. The one I use is scrupulously fair. If he finds something wrong like headlight alignment he'll let you fix it or do it himself for pennies. You stand there with him ans he gives a running commentary on what he's checking
