my chain riveter broke. I only bought it today.

Bought it today from hein gerick to put on a new tsubaki chain I also purchased from them.

I've put on a chain before but last time hammered/punched the rivets down and it served ne well but this time thought I'd do it properly.

I was pretty much doing it as per manual and applying 20nm of torque then the mandrel sheared off.

For 80 quid it better I thought...

Well it hasn't. Do you think I'd be able to return it? I have the receipt.

That is exactly what happened to me with the one i got from M and P,i just bought a new mandrel and it was fine.

Similar thing happened to my Dad, he realised he was using it wrongly. Got to make sure something isn't sticking out far because it has such great forces applied to it. Since he realised this he hasn't had a problem.

Yeh I guess that's why the instructions state that the pin shouldn't be protruding more than 1mm so I made sure of that.

I did follow the instructions.

Would HG replace it for another?

Should do under the sale of goods act (I think it's called). It wasn't suitable for the job it was designed for.

On another note I managed to get a new tsubaki xring chain for 50quid from HG. Luckily I had my 2009 bike catalogue in the car so I quickly price checked it and they were retailing for £70 normally.

HG said they're discontinuing selling chains so getting rid of what's left. Might be worth asking your local one.

On a side note, the £10 ebay chain splitters are actually very good - mine has split about 15links now (520 pitch - I was bored and had a small off-cut of chain to play with) and still works great, and Im not exactly careful with it.

Similar thing happened to me
Got the one from HG, took it home, pushed out 1 rivet no probs, was pushing out the second and snapped the pin and the thread inside it as well

Took it back and got free replacements, they seemed to think they were doing me a favour by not charging me for them.
I pointed out that I followed the instructions to the letter as it was the first time I had done it, if the tool wasnt strong enough to do the job it was bought for then I want a full refund

The guy told me I should have ground the end off the rivet first, i suggested they should add that into the instruction manual for the tool.

Second one was fine, after I ground the end of the rivet off first. Added my own note into the instructions so I dont forget next time
