Basically, sold my VFR a while back.. The guy who bought it said he'd send off the V5C for me, so I let him. He also nicked my screwdriver.

Anyhow, got a notice through saying tax is due soon blah blah, ignored because this was pretty shortly after selling the bike, couple of weeks like..

Today I get a "Just a little reminder!" notice threatening with £80 fine and whatnot.

Now since it's a week 'til I get hit with the fine I figured, hey, I can SORN it online and cover my arse here, fantastic.. So I did that, but now I'm thinking this could cause problems, as evidently they'll think I still have the bike..

Did I screw up badly here?

All the contact details I still have for this chappy is a name, his surname I can't entirely remember but I think it was Taylor, and a mobile number.. Guess the thing to do is to contact him and send off his details to the DVLA?

That's why you should always keep the bit of the V5 the buyer fills in and send it off yourself.

By SORNing it you have let DVLA know that the vehicle is still in your name as you say.

You need to inform DVLA that you no longer own the vehicle ASAP, before he is caught speeding and leaves you dodge the fine and points and explaining why your bike is on the road still. Wink

Yes, indeed, it was foolish.

I called the DVLA people, and it seemed to be implied it will be fine, and that I am to return their reminder with a letter explaining my folly and passing on any details I have.

Becareful because they are cunts. (DVLA) make sure you ask for names. This happens lots of times I think. I know a girl who this happened to and got a fine. Pretty much always keep the bit you are suppose to send off. Unless you can trace the fuckers and beat them up.

Never trust anyone to send off your log V5 - always do it yourself.

the fact you have put it on sorn means you are admitting responsibility for it.
what if the new owner is caught out on it and gives your name to the police, they will confiscate the bike and come after you for any offences committed buy the guy.
write a letter to dvla tonight and tell them you sold the bike and sent off all documents but have not received conformation from them, tell them to take your name off as the registered keeper.

Use recorded delivery so you can get a copy of the signature that signed for it if they say they don't receive it.

Recorded isn't necessary. You only have to prove you sent it off, so just get proof of postage when you send it. You can get that for free whenever you send anything with a normal first class stamp. Thumbs Up

Dvla like just about any large buissness, do not sign for recorded mail......
Imagine how long the poor olé postie would be getting all the Sig's.
They are just marked as received.

Well at least one thing, declaring it as sorn will fuck up the new guy, as it will now flag up as not supposed to be on the road, so will be impounded Laughing
