Right, today I decided to take the slightly longer route home (typical), and as I'm riding along the low pressure oil light comes on, the bike loses power and then dies, refusing to start again.

I push it for a bit to a street light and then decide to check the oil and as far as i can tell its got more than enough oil on the dipstick, but still wont start.

Finally, I push it all the way back, try starting it and after a few tries (normally starts first time) it springs into life and idles fine.

Does anyone know what the hell happened? I'm riding a Honda Hornet, and it broke down on friday due to a dodgy battery connection which is now fixed. And its done about 350 trouble-free miles since then - if thats important at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Omar

Sounds like an electrical fault. If it had really suffered low oil pressure enough to stop the engine it would be knocking like grannies knees when you re-started it.

hi m8

i would be looking at all electrical connections and giving them a spray with wd40 as it sounds like an intermittent fault so bad earth dirty connector socket etc.

check side stand switch too as they are a good place to start this weather.

is the kill switch working properly wd 40 there.

and spray in the ignition barrel too.hth

The low pressure light probably came on because the ignition system died completely preventing the bike from running. As you see when you first switch the girl on before you crank the engine the oil light comes on then also. Same thing.

It's electrical without a doubt. Do all of the above and you should get to the bottom of it.

Hmm, thanks for the responses everyone.

I'll have a shufty around soon and whack some WD40 over any bare wire ends and connections - i assume this just acts to insulate them?

4 stroke - I should mention that when the bike first died it was okay cranking over but just not starting - is this what you mean?

Its all quite annoying and breaking down isnt doing anything for the manly image im trying to cultivate. Although it hasn't done it near the University yet though so thats good Smile

Yes, the bike will display the oil warning light when the ignition is on, sometimes still when cranked.

When the bike is up and running/idling the oil light will then go out, unless you do indeed have low oil pressure.
