I seem to remember Korn had similar issues with his 250 a while back.
The XRs are a bit of an odd breed as I believe they are (though not sure about the 400?) sold more as enduro bikes than trail bikes, but on the understanding they're pretty reliable ones.

At least it is a pretty simple single, so shouldn't actually be too complex/drawn out a process to do.

Franchised dealers or proper engineers?

Going to be in the region of £150-200 of parts in any case.

My local guy would probably charge you another say £120-150 for the engine work.

If you took him in the head and barrell loose, he'd probably charge £60 for the rebore + valves, he'd probably recut the valves and their seats for you too because he has a proper machine and it takes no time. Everything would all come back covered in swarf though.

So, my local guy, do the carb yourself, do the engine building yourself. £250 all in.

Local guy, he does the work say £350.

Local guy is usually half a third of the price so you could easily be looking at £700+ from a main dealer. I also bet they don't seat and lap the valves properly, just bung them in and roughly lap them with an electric drill.
