saw this guy all over the news and for the life of me cant undrstand why he is being portrayed as a homecoming hero

Q) why are we taking responsibility for this man.
A) Because we were (possibly) complicit in his torture

I wasn't, nor were the vast majority of the other 30 million or so taxpayers who must foot the bill for this bollox. He has had free room and board for a while, now he can fook off. Deport him now, he has no place here. He is not British and even the faintest hint of him behaving in a way hostile to this country and he should be on the 1st boat out. Where he goes or what happens to him when he gets there is non of my concern.

he is not a UK national and his own government should be taking up his case and looking after him. The title of the thread is misleading. Here is not his home. I note that he has not rushed over to the U.S. to complain through their courts.

no doubt well paying for him and the rest of his extended family when they decide to come live with him for the rest of their days.

Interesting that in his statement he claims that prior to his arrest torture was an abstract concept to him. Odd for a man who comes from Ethiopia (one wonders what his family claimed when the originally came to the UK) and has been wandering about in the dodgier parts of the Muslim world studying Islam with a false name and fake passport

If there is truth to his claims, then the British government have a responsibility to make amends for their mistake.

Clearly he is an innocent man, otherwise he wouldn't of been released, so here we have an innocent man which has been imprisoned for 4 years and our government was allegedly happy to hand him over, someone made a mistake and it cost this man big.

Being an illegal immigrant, that doesn't justify the punishment he has been through.

I'm surprised that stories like this get peoples blood boiling so much, what i guess it boils down to is that he isn't British and he is taking your tax monies? Well there's a lot of British that do far worse than this fella and they haven't had to go to prison for 4 years to get it. The ridiculous amount of money which have been paid to those who have just fucked the economy through their greed should weigh on your mind far more. They have just cost us all and probably our children a huge amount.

My opinion in a nutshell is, cut the guy a break, he is due for one. There should be an inquest or some kind of litigation into what allowed this to happen and he should be catered for while that goes on. I believe it's everyone's right for justice, not just people with a British passport. Once all that is taken care of, then kick him out of the country.

he was released due to lack of evidence, the fact that he had traveled to Pakistan and was attempting to cross over to afgan with a false name and dogey passport dosent seem to matter to do gooders like yourself

This chap is obviously as innocent as a newborn babe - his lawyers have said so, so it must be true. In fact they tell us that all Gitmo detainees and others held around the world are innocent - thats what they are paid (by us) to do.

I saw a chap on the TV the other day who was swearing blind that the 2/7 bombers where infact innocent - so that is probably true.

It just leaves me wondering - who is doing all the terrorism and why are we accusing the totally innocent all the time.

BTB I also believe that Adams and McGuiness and thier cronies are as pure as the driven snow and the Gibralter 4 were just tourists murdered by the SAS.

Sarcasm aside I think the ideas behind Gitmo etc were sound. The intention to lock up illegal combatants etc. Unfortunately there have been some major failings in the application of it, and no doubt some of the detainees are as innocent as they claim. Maybe even this chap. but id like him to explain why he had

1. travelled on a fake passport
2. chose to travel under a false name
3. why was he trying to get into afgan

Maybe not, but gosh darn, when you decide to engage in illegal activity, well, unfortunately you also decide to take on the consequences of doing so, whatever they may be. Basically, if he hadn't been here, none of this would ever have happened, and he could have gone on his merry way and blew whoever up as he pleased.

Agree with you on the other points though.

Maybe he was up to no good, but maybe he wasn't. Who are we to decide/assume he is a terrorist or not. Which is exactly my point.

We take our legal system for granted here but put yourself in this guys position and for the sake of argument, pretend like he isn't a terrorist. Does the punishment seem fair? Would such a thing ever happen to a white European?

The ideas behind Gitmo were heavily flawed. Suspending the right to council and torture (I don't care for the debate about this, water boarding is torture as a Japanese POW was tried for torture in the US and was sentanced after being found guilty of water boarding in WW2) goes against everything I believe to be good about western society.

Also did you know this guy faced the death penalty and the US was refusing to provide the 'torture evidence' to the British high court. So without a fair trial or council this guy would of been killed on circumstantial evidence, all which seems to be good enough for you, but not for me. I'm sure if someone in your family was arrested and convicted by circumstantial evidence you'd be outraged.

I would also like him to explain the things you listed. With all the rights any other criminal would get. Personally i don't see terrorism as any worse than any other serious crime, so i don't understand this witch hunt mentality where the rule book can be thrown out and suspension is enough to justify the means.

I can't help but consider the next generation of terrorist which we and the US and all the other allies have bread after all of our actions. Do you ever wonder how things got like this? Why do you think we and the US have been a target in recent years?

This bloke must be the worst victim of circumstance EVAR if you can believe he's that innocent that easily

He lives here for 7 years then goes to Afghanistan "to get over his drug addiction" - WTF?! Who the hell goes to Afghanistan to get over a drug addiction?!!

Then, just after a terror attack, he ups sticks again to go to Pakistan.

Then he gets arrested on a fake passport trying to get back into Britain

Yeah, he's just a big tourist is all

I think at that time Afghanistan was essentially cut off, the borders were closed. Depending on what kind of passport he had it might have excluded him from entry hence the fake one. If you were detained for 7 years on something as flimsy as this, I suspect you might be a wee bit miffed.

All he did was attempt to travel with false papers, they could prove that so he should've been punished persuant to that crime.

He's probably not as pure as the driven snow, no one is. But if the UK government were complicit in detaining him, then he needs to be compensated. Again, put yourself in his shoes. If you'd been detained for 7 hours never mind 7 years; you'd want redress.

Gitmo bay was never a sound idea, it was illegal under international law from the beginning. This idea of 'A Terrorist' is so nebulous, its just a stick used by the government of the day to beat us with.

That said, those that do plot to change the way I prefer to live my life should be caught and charged. But it should be done within the letter of the law. The idea that a person can be caught, then detained without charged and when eventually charged not have access to evidence and only have representation from the people who charged them in the first place is patently wrong.

Morally, it puts us down with the terrorists it purports to stop.

Thumbs Up

If he's innocent we should give the guy a break and let him stay in this country.

If we have no evidence against him but suspect he may be a bit dodgy, it might be handy to have him in this country where we can keep an eye on him.

The problem with punishing people on suspicion rather than evidence, is that the injustice committed by the state may exceed what it is supposed to be protecting us from.

Rights to a fair trial which we have had for centuries, were swept away after a few isolated events.

Imprisonment without trial, and torture are not things we should be proud to be associated with.

What's wrong with him staying in the UK if he was a resident here before? I'm glad he's back. Guantanamo is a disgusting place that should never have been opened.

He resided here yes, but was never given official residency. Why should he be granted official residency?

there is only one reason someone living in the uk would try to get into Afghan via Pakistan, under false names and passports and that's to fight with the Taliban against British and US solders

ive done 2 tours of Afghan already, op Herrick 3 and 7, so i know what im taking about.

he was released due to lack of evidence, not because he was innocent, he was traveling with false documents (Hmmm i wonder why). everyone knows he was up to no good,

If reorg is telling the truth, and we have no reason to believe he is lying, then we should send Binyam mohammed back to the desert.

Oh shit, sorry, I forgot to be a PC fuck-up...innocent until proven guilty, let him into Britain and give him plenty of benefits.

A PC fuck up... Doh!

Reorgs "truth" is speculation and conjecture. We have no reason to believe these things are lies because they were never the truth to begin with, most i'd give him is educated guess. Why don't you try stepping down off soap box, going to the local council estate, find a few white British single mothers with no source of income and tell them to get the fuck out. Or is this more (as i suspect) got to do with the stigma attached to Islamic suspected terrorists (innocent or not) than people getting their hands on your tax money?

Read what everyone has already said until you get it. We should follow our own rules to determine if he is guilty of not.
After all, how many innocent people have died so far because of piss poor US intelligence? Or maybe you think the WMD's are still out there, being smuggled into the country by people using fake passports.....

He was caught and admits trying to enter Britain on fake passports. This is enough, in my eyes, for him not to be allowed to re-enter this country and have rights within it.

Muslim, Hindu, Christian - terrorist or otherwise

I can't understand why we're falling over ourselves to help
