I know generally speaking you're supposed fit tyres as a pair, but I've just picked up a late '90s GS500 with brand new tyres on,

Front is Avon Roadrider and rear is Dunlop Arrowmax both standard sizes for the GS.

Are the tyres decent ones and should I fit a matching pair?

I haven't ridden since passing my DAS a year ago but plan on doing lots of miles over the next few months, is the above combination of tyres likely to give me any trouble? I have just been out for a 50 mile gentle ride to try get them scrubbed in a bit and they seem to be ok, the roads are perfectly dry at the moment and I didn't lean the bike by much though.

The ideal is to have them as pairs but it isn't a must have. They should be fine. When it does come to change one or both, then you can match them up.

Ok cheers Very Happy

Just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be sliding all over the place, did seem a bit of a waste of money to fit another new one to make them match. With the miles I'll be doing they'll wear out pretty soon anyway!

I have a Pirelli Diablo on the front and a Metzeler m3 on the back, not 1 problem or issue at all. Just depends on the quality of the tyre i guess.

Look for the TSD (tyre sensing device) and disconnect it. Then the rear tyre wont know what the front tyre is, thus it wont complain and/or attempt to throw you off just for being a cheapskate.

Used to have a Dunlop Roadsmart and a Shinko shite on the Hyosung. Both were fine, front being the shinko was a bit vague but did its job. Got front and rear Roadsmarts now and they are excellent tyres.

I have a maxxis on mine and the front is like new being a dual compound but the back has taken a hammering during the winter and is nearly down to the little rubber blocks in the middle where as the front is still like new.

Will get a a RoadSmart for the rear as its highly recommended.

Thats about right then....

Rear's always wear at least twice as fast as fronts...... Due to all the load they have to deal with.

I dident get on with Avons on my Hornet,

But let me say you have a GS500 you MUST, i repeat MUST go out right now and get fitted a brand new pair of Bridgestone BT45's, you will thank me later, and so will your goose.

Seriously though the BT45 is the best tyre for the 500 class...

Can honestly say (apart from on the scooters I had, and maybe my Pit bike), That I've never had the problem of the rear wearing out first.

My fronts used to scrub out on the edges quicker than the rear used to wear out. No idea why.

I dont think I have ever had tires that matched. There are those of course that say you have to have a certain brand and all matching etc, but I have never had any problems in the past.

Hummm, have looked around and getting mixed reviews, some say not good in the rain and others say they're generally a reasonable tyre. Roads have been dry the last few days and they're still being scrubbed in.

Will take it out for a (careful) ride in the next downpour and see what the grip is like, if it's shite I'll get something decent fitted.

I've used avon roadrider on my XJ600.

Never had a problem with them myself but then I never really push it, it's just not a bike I really want to push since it generally bounces round corners. So for commuting, maybe with a bit of aggressive riding in nice conditions they're fine, wouldn't use them for a 'fun' tyre though.
