its an old 1998 Peugeot Trekker. Yesterday as I was riding it it went really loud. I tried putting my finger over the exhaust and it didn't go off.

This is an old bike and only has to last me another 3-4 months so I want to fix this as cheaply as possible. any advice?

Sounds like you either have a hole in your exhaust, or it's blowing somewhere. Start it up, and see if you can feel it blowing or spot the leak. If it's a tiny hole you may be able to use silicone bath sealant to plug it. If not, it may need a bit of welding, depends how rusty it is!

If it's blowing around the join to the cylinder head you may need a new gasket or some exhaust paste to seal it.

Ok theres a huge hall in the pipe running from the bike into the thick part of the exhaust. What's the best way of temperarly fixing it? I'm considering just wrapping a big roll of tape around it. Anythin more effective? I may need a new exhaust otherwise. I'll see if I can get one for cheap. but meanwhilre I just need a temporary fix!

heres a picture of the hole. As I said the bike isn't worth alot and I need it to last another few months.

I used to have a trekker and remember the exhaust being very prone to rust, so I expect that's what has caused the hole. A temporary fix would be to cut up a tin can (coke can for instance) and affix it with some exhaust bandage from Halfords. Ideally you'd want to weld a plate over it.

You can use a tincan, some exhaust gum and a couple of jubilee clips to cover it up.

Make sure you don't use a tin of beans though - if it's anything like my arse it'll blow even worse.

I bought some aluminium exhaust tape and wrapped it around the hole. I'll try and get some jubilee clips and a coke can soon to further fix this. How would I apply it though? what would I put on first? Should I take the aluminium tape off>

I also noticed that the exhaust pipe is a bit loose. Any advice on taking the bike apart to screw it on well?

Thtanks for the replies guys, greatly appreciated Very Happy

Take Tape off
Clean around the hole with wire brush or wire wool
Cut can down to size
Put can over hole and apply tape
Jubilee clips to hold the can in place and stop the tape from unpeeling itself.

(That is a guess Smile . I never heard of this method befre but sounds a good one)

I would imagine the fastners at the exhaust header are corroded to buggery, so be careful, you don't want to snap them. Where is it loose, at the cylinder head end or the mounting bracket? If its the bracket it's just a big allen key bolt if I recall that holds the exhaust in place.

RE the hole fix, the tape won't hurt if its left in place. Get some exhaust paste and smear it around the edges of the can to help it seal against the exhaust, wrap it round the exhaust over the hole and place a jubilee clip around each end, then tighten the clips to secure it in place.

I would've thought getting to it should be quite straightforward, is there not an access panel of some kind in the storage compartment or behind the front wheel? Fiddling with the bolts may cause more problems than it solves if they are rusted to buggery, mind.

If they don't easily come undone after a good spray of penetrating oil then by Odin's beard don't force them or they'll almost certainly snap off, the original fittings are made of cheese (the fact it's a moped and it's age could mean that a previous owner has already done just that of course, perhaps while chopping and changing "performance" exhausts, hence the looseness - of course I'm speculating here!).
