Has anyone with a Suzuki GSXR1000K5/K6 got recall letter?

Just got a letter from Suzuki stating that all K5 and K6 GSXR1000's are being recalled for frame problems. No joke. They are offering some sort of brace and adhesive to 'fix it'. This is no April Fool joke.

Anyone else out there with one? I wouldn't trust a dealer to do this kind of work even if that was the only option!! Suzuki may be facing some compensation claims.

Let's club together and sort this one out.

Would anyone actually be happy with this though?, if i paid for a new bike thats what i would expect, i just would not trust sending it away to be tweaked, i would expect a brand new bike.

Alloy welding is a specialised job (doubt virtually any Suzuki dealers have someone qualified and experienced at allow welding), and would mean refinishing the frame. It would probably be cheaper to just supply a load of new frames and the labour to strip and rebuild the bikes.

Personally think the glued plate is a bodge.

They haven't made the K5/K6 for 3/4 years now, you can't get new ones anymore and a K8/K9 isn't representitive.

I spoke to a dealer about it a few days ago and there haven't been any failiures yet, just cracks on bikes that have had lots of heavy wheelies landed. Suzuki did a test and it took them about 50 or so wheelies to get it to crack. A by wheelies I mean hoicking it up to the balance point then jumping on the rear brake. It's not surprise it cracked after 50 landings with that sort of force.

Good effort by the bloke that managed it then!

50 wheelies isn't THAT many though. If you're a fan of wheeling and you get a new gixxer thou, you're gonna be hoicking it up a fair few times, so I'd be quite disappointed to be told it can only take 50 hard wheelies Confused

TBF if you did that to most bikes I suspect they would start to crack. Your head berarings and fork seals would also be a mess. Laughing

Well yeah, you'd be a bit daft but if it take 50 hard landings, it might maybe take 200 slightly rough landings. And if you do 1 agressive wheelie a day it's not gonna last the year!? Confused I still wouldn't be happy Razz

I like the idea of bikes having a quota of maximum wheelies before the frame snaps.

Somehow, I don't think this will be making the official specs and techs any time soon.

Overall, I feel that Suzuki's solution is a cheap bodge. Why do I want to voluntarily have some bike shop mechanic bolt and glue a brace to my bike and basically wipe £3k off its value in one go?

If Suzuki are so worried, they should be recalling these bikes and replacing the frames rather than get a bottle of glue out of the cupboard. I don't do wheelies but I am still concerned that the bike has an inherent fault that could be fatal in extreme situations.

You can bet that once you take it in for a bit of super glue around the welds you will be asked as a condition of the 'repair' to sign a no liability agreement so that if it does snap and you are severely injured you have no recourse.

John, what are you actually going to do about yours ?

I would be mighty peed off if that was me. No way I'd settle for a repair job. A recall is just that, a recall. They take it back, and replace it. Not take it back and bodge a fix onto it.

Hi Simon How are you doing? I agree. I am not happy but haven't had the time to sort it out yet. I might ask the dealer for a trade in deal against a new GSXR or R1.

Suzuki seem to have problems with welding metal! I appreciate that constant wheelies are probably going to do some damage but sheering the frame in two is a little unexpected!! These are motorcycles after all, not vacuum cleaners!!
