I'm sorry I can't help it until I actually get a new bike Laughing But at least now I actually have a full licence Wink

So here it is i've been itching to buy another RS but this time I have enough to buy a mint one and one that works. Here's the two options:

Option 1 : Buy a mint RS, full power and run down the restriction clock on my licence and rack up some NCB. +ves lower insurance, a bit more power and learn to maintain a bike properly. And scratch that itch Laughing

Option 2 : Buy a big bike (Hornet/SV/Monster), restrict the bike to 33bhp and keep like that for 2 years then keep it after the restriction as well until i'm used to the power. +ves a bigger bike, learn more maybe but higher insurance and more expensive.

What would you do? or what should I do?

Sorry for the repetitive threads and thanks for your help Thumbs Up

When you say MINT RS do you mean RS125

if so just go for a cheap 500 like a honda cbx 550 or suzuki gs500 or
you can get a resonable condition one with tax n mot for around £500-£700

Option 1 is my vote.

I started out biking on an RS and for me it has put me in real good stead for the type of riding I like to do now.

I am not bothered by stupid speeds, I prefer the twistys and maintaining a good sensible pace through them and I got some real good experience off the RS which had helped me when getting on the bigger bikes.

The RS does what it says on the tin, its a real sporty quick little learner bike.

I always feel that bigger bikes restricted are like tigers in the circus.
Nice to look at but dont really do what they were born to. Thumbs Up

I'v always wanted a go of a full power stunning looking RS, they look like a lot of fun, nippy and light good for filtering.

If I were you I would get the best rs I can afford get 2 months insurance on it have some fun with it then move on, sell it for the same price you bought it.

1 year on a rs is to much if you have a full license.

If I remember correctly, a full power RS is not allowed on a 33bhp licence, even if it makes less than 33bhp, it exeeds the power to weight ratio part of the restriction.

p.s. gpz500 Thumbs Up

Cheers
John

As above, I'd start on something like a cheap GPZ or SV.

Insurance could even be cheaper than the RS125!

I did over 2 on a full license! I must be a glutton for punishment!

Happy days though, loved every minute of it and if I had the cash to run 2 bikes would defo look at getting another mint one for fun days out.

Sorry I should have made it clear, yes Aprilia RS125.

As for recommending GPZ and so on, I know they would be good bikes but I think it's about time I got something which is a bit special if you know what I mean. My past 2 bikes have been a bit on the scruffy side and used more as a tool for commuting so if I go the big bike route it will probably be an 03+ Hornet/Monster 620/Pointy SV.

I don't know why but there's something about the RS that makes me want one Confused But this time one that actually works!

Oh and it will probably be for 1 year or so of my restriction

something a bit special??
why??
get something practical untill your restriction period ends.
may be a thumper a xr250 ect, a klr650 will sit right on the 33hp limit
i think you should get something that will take the hits,
a rs125 will need to be ragged everywhere, and as nice as the look think of all those expensive plastics if you drop it.

good luck with what ever you decide

That doesn't say 'special' to me, that says a slightly more expensive and newer commuter bike than a GPZ.

If you're happy to sink a decent chunk of money for the sake of having a shiny commuter bike with a newer plate, then go for it.
Personally, I wouldn't be.

Maybe I put it across wrong but I'm not looking for a bike based on how new it is but more on the fact that I want to buy the bike because I want/like it not just because it's cheap and does the job. I don't have bucket loads to spend probably 3k but that's pushing it as well (this is for the big bike not RS). I've only said those bikes because that's whats been recommended by others so i'm open to other suggestions.

As for the XR etc i'm not a fan of the upright riding position/high bars well anything like the YBR for my A2 course I don't want Laughing

Aesthetics (shineyness)/new plate all grouped in the same thing to me. Could get a second hand curvy SV for £1k and spend a few hundred on suspension and brake lines to have it a decent chunk better bike/ride than the much more expensive newer bike.

I can't argue with you there and funnily enough i've never thought of it that way, as in buy a cheap and cheerful bike and spend some of the extra making it better/how I want. Thanks for that, I think I'll look into it Thumbs Up
