I know what you are talking about but it's hard to explain. Old vfr400's sound similar to what you are describing.

Where as older bikes usually sound a bit mechanical newer bikes sound kinda like a sewing machine.

VFRs sound like that because they have gear driven cams Thumbs Up

I know that, it's just the best example of the noise i could think of.

Unless all new bikes have gear driven cams which they don't, it can't be that. I guess it's just down to tighter tolerances.

I've had two new bikes (though one was already run-in) and neither made a specifically different noise that I noticed.

Not the fuel injection pump is it?

When turning on the ignition on the SV and the Tenere they both do it for a couple of seconds then stop. Then once you get the engine running, it starts again.

Anything with the Triumph 675 engine seems to do it too. Very noticable.

Having being commuting a lot on the (naked) zx9 recently I've noticed you get that 'induction roar' a lot more when opening it up in a high gear at slowish speed - well may just be a case that you can hear it over the exhaust at that point!
