I've just got this from the AOL News Channel. I just thought you might be intrested.

New Speed Penalties to Be Introduced

Points for speeding are to be reviewed

A flexible system of speeding penalties will be introduced, the Government has confirmed.

Motorists driving way over the speed limit face up to six points on their licence, under plans to be outlined next month.

But those caught just marginally over will escape with as few as two, The Sunday Times reveals.

A consultation on the widely trailed scheme will be launched some time after the local and European elections on June 10, Department of Transport officials said.

At present, drivers caught breaking the speed limit receive three points regardless of their actual speed.

An automatic ban is slapped on anyone racking up 12 points - or four offences - within three years.

However, with 30,000 motorists suspended in 2002, ministers are concerned that people who need their licence for work are losing their livelihoods.

They also face a backlash over the increased use of speed cameras which critics argue is more about raising cash for the Treasury than improving road safety.

That view was rejected by Transport Secretary Alistair Darling.

Mr Darling said in a statement: "I'm in no doubt that cameras save lives. Independent research shows that they reduce death and serious injury by 35% at sites where they have been placed."

Sorry have I missed something!!

If you were going faster than the speed limit, nothing happened, as long as you kept it to 10mph over the limit. So, if the limit's 40, if you do, say, 46, it's OK.

Now, it appears that even if you go 1 mph over the limit, it's subject to a fine and 2 penalty points. If it's seriously over (and nobody has defined that threshold as far as I can see), it's 6 points and a fine.

It appears the government have sneakily reduced the threshold to zero by redirecting our focus.

Personally, I'm all for speeding fines and points and bans where they're appropriate and in relation to the amount that you'd gone over. However, it looks like it's just another way of increasing the revenue from speeders. No surprise there.

BTW, weren't they also going to introduce additional fines to contribute to the 'victims support fund'. Irrespective if the 'crime' produced a victim or not (as in these cases). Sounded to me like if you were going to compensate victims of crimes by the perpetrators of those crimes, in reality, it would be inpractical as you're often dealing with people who have no money. So, who has? Ahh the motorist!!! Could the adjustments to the speeding thresholds be related to this? It wouldn't surprise me.

Arrrggghh! Evil or Very Mad

Nice weekend for riding though. Ho hum. Cool

With the current law you can be fined and given points for being 1mph over the limit - however it is very unlikely that you would be.

At the moment they will do you if your doing over

Speed Limit + 10% + 2mph

So in a 30 limit you should be ok if you go past a camera while doing 35.

And that's part of my point. What are the real boundaries?

Sure being 1mph IS technically speeding, but so is 30mph over the limit. The two extremes could hardly be taken as one and the same.

Suggestion:

If you speed up to 10mph over the limit, you get a warning. No fine, no points. Do it again, you get fined, no points. Over 10 mph, up to 20mph, no warning, £60 fine, 3 points. Etc

I wouldn't mind the fine so much, it's the points that get me. And they're good for 4 years!!! Rolling Eyes

Yes, if...

It's a Monday, Thursday and all Saturday's which fall on the 11th or 23rd, except a leap year, when 8th and 27th apply instead.

I wish they'd actually change the speed limits to be more realistic.

70mph for motorways is just silly.

There has to be some officer distrection available.

35mph (or even 30 for that matter, yet this is totally legal in most areas) past a school at kicking out time is far more dangerous (and stupid) than 135 down a deserted motorway.

A colleague at work got done for 32mph in a 30 limit, and that was from a ticket from a mobile speed camera.

All the best

Different areas have different methods of calculating their limits.

Depends how big a quota they have to make up I suppose Rolling Eyes.

While we're on the subject - I've read in todays paper that Essex had the highest number of people killed/seriously injured on their roads last year despite the HIGHEST number of convictions from scameras. The number of KSI increased from the previous year too.
