Precis :

ECOHR - says delete the DNA and finger prints of innocent people on the UK databases.

Government says no.

Jacqui Smith is a complete moron. When I see her speak, its like she exists on a different plane. People say things but she just seems oblivious.

On ID cards she quipped that people where stopping her in the street asking for them to brought in more quickly and why wasn't it happening sooner!

I suspect she'll be the same on this, a strong audible message stating a clear no to keeping DNA and other details on people under suspicion but not charged.

She is one of the worst MP's for citing the silent majority as supporters of what ever she happens to be mithering on about. For example, 2 million people say no to ID cards but wait! 63 million people obviously said yes because they didn't say no! How can she be wrong. Rolling Eyes

She truly is a goat.

Thumbs Up

I just wanted to know what the negative implications of the government holding this DNA info.
I started reading the article but im in work, as far as i can see this is a bit shi**y if they're not complying but what difference does it make if they have this data?

It means the police are shifting further over to a wait and see type of policing. Basically, instead of investigating and preventing crime, they wait for it to happen then use a huge ominously humming supercomputer with a database to 'catch' who ever did it.

On paper they can say they're solving more crimes, what isn't said and is more important is how many they've prevented.

There is also the risk of being fingered for something you just didn't do. You visit a flat of a friend of a friend, while there you have a drink. You're finger prints and DNA are on the glass.

Some time later on, the friend of a friend is murdered. Your DNA is found at the scene, you have no alibi. All of a sudden you're in the shit and all you did was have a drink.

It also detract from the innocent until proven guilty ideal. Instead of the police having to prove you are guilty, you have to convince them your innocent. Bare in mind, all they're looking for are ticks in the right boxes and another case 'solved.'

Its one of those things where it seems innocuous until it happens to you.

Thumbs Up

3 things:

Jury of your peers, many people know DNA does not equate to guilt ie if it is found at the scene of a crime, unfortunately an awful lot of people think it does. Oh his DNA was at the scene he must be guilty.

Human error ie mislabeling of vials incompetence of not admitting they are wrong , finger prints are now discredited as a form of evidence due to a Scottish case where a WPC was convicted of purjury but she was freed on appeal as the experts got it wrong.

Corporate interest , in that we live in a meritocracy, if the government holds our DNA sample what prevents us from becoming a genocracy?. Ie you get a job based upon your genes rather than your achievements this is unfair as it cannot be changed, discrimination based on qualifications and or experience is fair as you can work towards changing this.

Another facet is that the DVLA sells the details on your V5c , for £2.50 a pop, they sell your details off the electoral register too for £5 for a few hundred names and addresses. If they have your DNA on a database what prevents the government from selling it to companies , like insurance / mortage companies etc. Just think how many questions you have to fill into insurance companies , and how getting more experience more NCB can reduce this...

Ah I'm sorry but your genes are bad we cannot insure you...
