2nd time at Tonymoto MX track today (went for the first time last week) ... I'm still a noob, but deffo getting better .. sure I am still one of the slowest in the group, but I am ‘doubling’ more of the jumps now and almost tagging onto some of the slower riders!!!

Nice, must get myself to a 'proper' graded track some time soon.

Had my first taste of motocross at Ashdown farm last weekend; was good fun. This isn't me, but an idea of the track (it was much muddier and bumpier for us, as well as a bit slower )

Nah, enduro/trail is rather different; they have more varied terrain; 'proper' single track, more open areas, some almost trials-style bits etc.
This was my first enduro: https://blip.tv/file/975036?filename=Geesvids-ALapOfPennwoodHillHareAndHounds542.avi (probably need to click 'download playing) - note it's not as 'interesting' terrain as most are on, is very, very muddy and I was on a big heavy bike (690), is my first enduro (and am just not that quick anyway) so you don't quite get the idea of the speed of some of the faster people.

Those hill were 'interesting' at Ashdown, I was a little cautious with the ruts at the bottom and the hills being a bit bumpy anyway, though did get a bit faster through the day.

I think this sort of track is more considered a 'farm' or just 'practice' track, but it's still got most of the elements you'd want in a motocross track, with a little more interesting scenery thrown in.
There's plenty of 'proper' motocross tracks that are at least half way between the two extremes.

That's one good thing with the 690 - high geared 4 stroke seems to make it good at chugging up hills and through thick mud thanks to rather disparate power pulses.

I know people do occasionally take Trials bike to Enduroland, but obviously it's only the particularly tricky bits where the trials bike come into their own - though still, mostly you just need bravery on the bigger bikes .

There tends to be less 'man made' ones like tony moto (which I presumed he meant when he said 'proper'), but from when I've looked around there do seem to be lots of 'farm' style practice tracks snuck away. Usually seem to be quite popular too, so some people must know about them!

I was thinking it might be a bit better to start on a 4 stroke for a beginner but since ive never ridden one I wouldnt really know.

My brother has a 200 exc and even he is thinking is selling it and buying a kxf250.

The fad for four strokes is waning a bit, I believe. Mostly due to the maintenance, however, there's also the weight and the need for higher revs means that there's more rotational inertial to stop you turning.

Compare something like a KTM 300EXC to a 450SX-F and the 300 2 stroke probably actually has a wider power band with similar top end power, but also more low down power and less weight, yet still has an electric start thrown in.

I've got a 200EXC which I've found is definitely more challenging to ride than something a 250F is (or so I suspect), however it really invites you to try and make the most of it, while the small 4 stroke really does need to be revved to, it doesn't encourage you to do so quite as much from what I understand.

I'd quite like a 150SX converted for enduro use, but they're still pretty new and so expensive. 90.8kg no-fuel weight and a bit more midrange than the 125 apparently makes for a very enjoyable ride.

I haven't actually ridden competition motocross 4 strokes off road, I should point out, but have owned a Husaberg 501 Enduro bike (should point that weight is actually less than some jap motocross bikes) and ridden 4 stroke supermoto converted motocrossers.
The motocross bikes seemed almost a 'empty' - being a motocross bike they're designed for higher peak power, which means high revs are needed. While they are smooth getting to those revs and do have decent amounts of mid-range, it didn't seem that exciting. Apparently the 250s are really bad for this - high red lines that need to be reached, but nothing to make it clear when you've got there.
The Husaberg's extra few cc gave it a good dollop midrange and it was definitely a far faster bike than me, that was pretty good fun too, but I have a much bigger grin after riding my 200 - both from the light weight and the inviting nature of the revvy engine (which I should point out is lacking in the bigger 2 strokes, which are a bit easier to ride.)

Its evident both from what people say and from what I see going round the track that the 4-stroke is (currently) king ... noob or expert ...

Yes they are expensive to overhaul and for four strokes, need doing quite often but then no one said MX is a cheap or painless hobby!! But that doesn't stop 4t from being the better riders bike (from all the evidence I have had at MX tracks)...

Oh and not surprised the enduro bikes have a different power curve ... not all 2-strokes are small powerband all revvs ... a bit like my trials bike ... its a 2-stroke, but got lots of low down torque, its flat as a phart high up in the range, its just the porting/timing/pipe/stroke/flywheel etc ... but a 2-stroke MX bike is on-off ... especially if it has a tuned pipe like mine ... they are both 2-strokes, but the behavior is diametrical.
