right guys am 18 in my last year of A-levels and kinda undecided on what to do next.

Ive applied at uni to study building surveying in hope of becoming a chartered buliding surveyor. its 4 year sandwich course and then a further 2 years in employment before i can take the RICS test and become chartered. so ill be about 24ish before i start to make some decent money. But may possibly stay on a uni and study for a master degree and Phd.

Ive also applied an apprenticeship at bae to become a apprentice engineer. Main draw to this is earning money and the possiblity to get sponsered to do a degree in engineering so no debt and able to get a degree.

Cant decide what would you guys do in my situation i know its my choice but would like advice and others views

Regards Joe

First off, you seem to have a better idea of what your doing than a lot of people already at uni Smile

I have a couple of friends who went down the second route, on actually working at BAE before doing a Mech eng degree, seems a fairly sensible way to do it.

However you may well struggle to get an apprenticeship at the moment, none of my friends who have options of placements have managed to get one.

What I would do is hope for an apprenticeship, and continue to apply for both, but have the uni course as a more likely second option.

After labouring on many building sites I would STRONGLY suggest you go down the surveyor route.

The surveyors usually turn up in an 09' plated company car, mileage paid, suited and booted. Tell us a hole is deep enough or conforms to standards, fill out a bit of paper work and then bugger off to the next job. All this and earning around 26k!

I would have gone down this route myself but being 20 with very limited qualifications it would be around 28 by the time I qualified, you seem to be on the right path already. Get it done mate Thumbs Up

Do the degree. You don't want to be trying to get employed in this climate. It may be a little better in a couple of years.

I'd learn to spell and punctuate correctly for starters. Not taking the piss mate, but in the current climate you need to give yourself every possible edge over the rest of the rabble. Using correct punctuation and spelling in your communications with potential employers is key.

Chartered surveyor rather than Aeronautical engineer, particularly if you want to live in England...

But that's exactly what prospective employers will be doing when they read your CV. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to give the best first impression possible - you never get a second chance to make a first impression Smile

I didn't think you asked to see a cv for the job you're offering. I thought all you wanted was a discrete toilet and a man who doesn't howl too loudly?

My point is: unless you're offering the guy a job, stop yanking on about his spelling. Its a bike forum, not "find me a fucking job. com"

That said, the OP should learn when to use 'to' and not 'too'. That's the sorta thing a spellcheck won't pick up.

Big Ham's advice makes sense to me - if you can stay on at uni and do your phd I'd do that, as it's what - £15k tax free, guaranteed 3 year income. While the work world is still crap, it makes sense to be studying and bettering yourself for when the job market comes back up

Then perhaps he should go somewhere more suitable for career advice!

Nuff said.

A friend is a quantity surveyor. Made loads of money, was going to get a 350Z as a company car (!!!)... and now is being made redundant. Sad

I love the quote from Dischord above...sadly that isnt all a surveyor does n coming from someone who does it for a living i'd know! You are right about the suited n booted bit with 09 cars tho woooooooooop!

Rottweiler...as already said i'd go down the route of the degree at the current point because QS's are not in high demand at the moment, in fact a recent BUILDING magazine said that it was the profession heading the dole queue's!

Degree wise if you can get in with one of the UK's big 4 you could look at distance learning out of Reading University...its RICS accredited and allows you to be on-site 5 days a week, which you will need!
