Summer or all timer?

Ok so now the "silly season" has started, who has been riding thoughout the winter rain or shine, who has been riding through the winter on occassions when the weather was nice, who has just gotthe bike back out, and who is still to scared to get the bike out.

Myself i've been riding everyday throughout the winter on the 650 and for such a good time i'm going to treat her to a nice new exhaust.

I just made it through my 3rd winter, should have been my fourth but I didn't do a lot of riding last year as I lived on campus and therefore walked most the time, or got buses to the centre. Otherwise its rain sun sleet snow fog ice whatever I'm riding.

I used to be an all weather biker for the first 5 years of my riding career and looked down on the sunny sunday heroes

Then I got a car and now I only ride the bike in winter if I have to battle town traffic somewhere or if the roads are dry and I can have some fun. No point in riding the bike if you can't enjoy it imo, it costs more to commute on the bike anyway so it's mostly for fun now and I just don't enjoy wet roads that much

I used to be all day everyday no matter what the weather. Since i moved house and have to keep the bike about a mile away at a mates i can hardly be bothered to get it out, especially in the crappy weather.

I used to mock sunshine sheilas, now i am one.

I am an all weather biker, even went out for a pleasure ride last Wednesday when it was hail, then snow, then hail again. I have so far done 3000 pleasure miles since January.

It's generally the fair weather riders that have creaetd the impression of bikes being a toy, rather than a necessity, which impacts on all assorted costs, insurance, rrp of new bikes, etc. Bikes can sell for well above their mechanical value because of inflated spending power of middle aged men (or men with middle aged mentalities) who hink nothing of a one of hit of 3-8 grand for something that is going to sit in a garage most of the yerar (and therefore have minimal fuel costs, and maintenance costs etc). Young bikers, riding day by day, therefore have to suffer the ridiculous over expense of bikes - having to pay a lot more than a car for a lot less, relativeley speaking - becuase of the hobby riders.

It depends where you commute though.

For me my work is 1 mile away, I also take my kids to school 1.5 miles away. A wee bit hard on the bke, no ?

The time I get geared up and get the bike from the garage I'm sitting in the office already.

If i need to go somewhere i use my bike, it's all i have. Which is fine 80% of the time, weather is the least of my troubles. It's doing the shopping and giving people a lift.
Twice a week i have loan of a car which fills in the gaps ( i abhor sitting in pointless traffic holdups, and when i see a bike zip past i normally say to myself..'thats the way to do it )

Im another boring puff. I spent my first 3 years doing all weathers with a 'it'll never happen to me' attitude and 'look at the fair weather bikers' sort of theme.

Having said that I was riding a CBR600 that cost me 2k. I was putting on a 1 piece race suit and then waterproofs over the top. By the time I got ready and got the bike out it had taken longer than the journey.

Then theres being knocked off, hitting crap on the road and freezing your bollocks off. All with the added bonus of not riding a bike that can be thrown in a skip because it only cost small fry.

There are 10k people work on my site, in the last 14 days we have known of at least 7 accidents. 2 of which were directly contributed to the roadworks on the way throwing cobbles and mud on the road. Another from a bloke hitting diesel thrown down the road by the big tricks from said roadworks and breaking his arm in 5 places and then 1 guy who hit a patch of ice across the road. The rest were either rider error or common accidents. Seems like fun at the moment to be riding bikes first thing in the dark and cold

I guess sometimes a bike isnt a completely feasable form of transport when you have another choice to hand. For some people its not the easiest by far, I can get into the car whenever I want - on the bike I need to put my contacts in, make sure my tyre pressures are ok, get all my gear on and then get it out of the garage. Then I cant carry all my stuff to work or bring back all the shopping.

Bikes are fun, bikes are great. Unfortunately for some of us they arent the beginning and end of the world. Im sorry if me spending 5k on my bike has really upset you Steppen, how it actually affects you I dont understand if Im honest.

Hey,
My CB's been tucked up in my dads garage since November! Since getting my Little Fiat Cinquientio i've enjoyed the warmth and comfort of a car, not to mention the radio!

I don't care if people call me a fair weather biker. At the end of the day (Or more like start) i get to work warm and dry and my bike doesn't get eaten by road salt.

Years of winter riding has left my finger ends numb, I kid you not when I say I can no longer feel the ends of my fingers! Give me a nice warm heater any cold winter day!
