okay my m.o.t is running out and im sure my bike will fail as the garage told me there's something wrong with my suspension :S

something to do with it dipping.. cant really remember what he said. My MOT runs out next month and as I know it will fail I really don't want to book it in till I have the money to spend on the repairs... would I get in trouble for riding it round with it needing an mot I don't want to put it through till about June... or will I have to book it in MOT as soon as it runs out?

I think its just a 50-60 pound fine for no mot. But why keep on riding something that 'potentially' isnt roadworthy?

Only 5 weeks - thats alright then... Rolling Eyes

Why take the risk of getting caught, fined of convicted of such a stupid motoring offence at what I am guessing is quite a young age? With all of the ANPR cameras lurking around our streets I reckon you have a decent chance of getting rumbled.

I was under the impression it was a £30 fine with no points. I don't think the police are allowed to sieze the bike for simply having no MOT, so long as you and the bike are otherwise legal. They might make you book a test and only allow you to take the bike directly to it, though.

I've done it plenty of times and never been caught but riding around constantly for 5 weeks is a bit risky. All it would take is one ANPR-equipped police car and you've had it.

It's definitely worth enquiring into how much the repairs will cost and possibly borrowing the money if at all possible (perhaps ask your employer if you need the bike to get to work). As others have said it's probably best not to ride around with knackered suspension if you can avoid it.

ANPR will pick you up and you will be fined. If it's not MOT'd don't ride it until it is, simple as.

Public transport is for the poor not motorbikes. Wink

Hi, have a check to see if your insurance covers you if you have no MOT. Majority don't, bigger issue is caused there.

Correct me if I believe but I believe no mot means your also not insurred as your insurance doesnt cover your bike without being mot'd, get it sorted for your sake Neutral

Partially correct - they can fine you up to £1000 if they take you to court but that's not how much the fixed penalty will be. Much like on the page you quoted, speeding is an up to £1000/£2500 fine (depending whether you're on a motorway or not) but the fixed penalty is £60. No seat belt is listed as up to £500 but the fixed penalty is £30. I was under the impression it was a £30 fixed penalty for no MOT but it might be £60. Either way, it's not an instant £1000 fine!

On the insurance front - I was waiting for someone to mention this! The insurer may well refuse to pay out for your bike/injuries if you have a comprehensive policy but cannot get out of the 3rd party obligation which is all that is legally required to drive on the road.

Actually, you're confusing things there. I'm saying they'll refuse cover, rather than refuse payment. Like if you say you have a car license, and you don't have one. You've lied to the company, so if you crash, you can be done for no insurance, but they can't get out of paying out for the TP.

Point out the bit where you reckon that I said it was a fixed penalty of up to £1000? I didn't, and I even provided the link to back-up the information that I was giving, unlike yourself who came out with a random figure of a fixed penalty of £30 which is just bollocks.

I suppose every time somebody posts saying they've been flashed by a speed camera doing 40 in a 30 you'll pop up saying they could be fined £1000 then? The maximum fine is almost irrelevant if you're talking about something that'll be dealt with by fixed penalty. The police are hardly going to waste their time taking someone to court just for having no MOT.

The £30 figure was from a local newspaper report a while back about ANPR and how many people they'd caught without x/y/z. I may be wrong but there's no way this guy is going to get fined £1k.
