Basically I was out with my other mates on peds riding around, had been riding for about 2 hours then all of a sudden, Bang and mine dies. I try starting it and it spits flames out of the exhaust and just wont start?

I have a gilera storm with a leo vince zx exhaust and a pm tuning xtech 70cc kit. The recovery guy said it looks like my exhaust valve has gone which could be quite costly?

Any help please Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

oh dear.

Recovery guy doesn't seem to understand the difference between 2 and 4 stroke.

Without wasting time, check for fuel and spark then rip the cylinder off and have a very good look at the piston and rings.

Put about a table spoon amount of petrol directly into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and tried to start after putting the plug back in, and nothing. Spark plug however looks absolutley fine. My mate behind me said something had hit him just as it happened aswell, which also didnt sound too good. And one of the nuts on the cylinder head sheered off.

Sorry being dumb, was this when you tried to take it off or you noticed it when you looked at it?

A tablespoon of fuel is waaaaay too much. I always say eazystart is much better.

This is just when I looked at it I went to take it off and realised, Fuel is fine, However doesnt sound like its sparking, not sure why this would make it flame out of the exhaust though?

I would imagine if you've got a hole in your piston that unburned fuel and oil would be pumped straight out of the exhaust port making a miniature flame thrower. This would also explain why it isn't starting.

Holed pistons usually occur when people who don't know what they are doing fit ill advised 'performance' mods and make their bike run stupidly lean. I suspect your mate who was hit by something was hit by a chunk of your piston.

Do a compresssion check and then if the compression is low take the head and the barrel off and inspect the piston. Five will get you ten that its completely destroyed.

I wonder if you changed your jetting after doing these mods?

Surely if the piece of piston had hit his mate, there would be fuel gushing all over the floor when he tries to start it. After all, the piece of piston must have exited somewhere if it hit his mate.

piece of piston exited through exhaust port.

When he tried to start it soon after fuel was going straight out the exhaust port and hitting the hot exhaust where it combusted thus the flames.

If he went out and tried to start it now it's cold he ain't going to get the flames... I'm guessing if he tried to start it long enough he'd get fuel coming out the exhaust but i think battery would go flat before that happened.

Bike would require compression to suck fuel through so its unlikely to come out of exhaust.

Just take the head off, should take all of ten minutes.

ok it sounds like you have blown it up no big deal you will need a piston and rebore from your local bike enginears and by the way the piston cant get out the exhust pipe lol not even a pice of it it is verry very unlikely

Indeed... cause it'd be the remains of the piston that was pushing the petrol mixture out the exhaust port to make the flames Rolling Eyes Smile.

as soon as i saw "xtech" i knew exactly what the problem would be , scored to feck barrel

those kits a re wank stay away from them , get a polini sport or a mhr rep with a 22mm carb for a decent and still reliable setup

Then: there was energy in the piece of piston for it to fly out of the exhaust.

Now, there is no compression to force fuel out of the exhaust port. There isn't even enough compression to force much fuel through the transfer port...

It's just very unlikely the chunk of piston, shot out of the exhaust port, down the downpipe, through the expansion chamber, around the U-bend and then through the silencer and out, bounce along the road and hit his mate Laughing

Not if its a small chunk of piston. A piece of piston went through the transfer port on my RGV and came out of the exhaust. Its not impossible.

Still had no luck finding the problem, a garage is picking the ped up tomorow to take a look they think its something to do with the ignition timing being out as it happened as i went over a speed bump, im thinking also go back to standard air box instead of the polini sponge thing, and put a 50cc cylinder back in and changing to a gianelli exhaust with a decent variator and speed control kit and decent clutch, What do you think to that?

if your putting the standard cylinder on you might aswell put it al back to standard then , the best performance increase you will get will be from a 70cc kit , variators and clutches are a waste on a stock barrel.

dont waste money on a garage , have you even take the cylinder head of yet to see what the barrel looks like ?

Yeah the cylinder is fine, a fair amount of carbon build up on top of the piston and the head gasket has a nice tear through it but the cylinder itself is fine

it could be anything from a blown piston ring to a fucked barrel , its a technical term garages like to use just before they lube up your rectum and stick a huge bill up there

id recommend fitiing a new cylinder kit anyway , xtec ones are wank . buy a new 70kit ir just put it back to a standard 50 if you cant afford one

as far as im aware its head gasket and base gasket, is there any cylinder kits that I can fit and run with the exhaust etc I have and have no problems with?

polini sport or a mhr rep if you want more power , a 22mm carb and carbon reeds would suit it nicely for a reliable set up
