 |
|
Here we go then folks, this one has got me beat. Below is a picture of a number plate which can be bought off various websites including ebay sellers and designed using their online plate designers. Now this is advertised by all of these people as being 100% road legal but are they in reality?
The plate is a full size 9x7 and the only other detail to be added is the makers name/postcode and legal marking. What I am interested in is the massive full height GB logo and the size of the text being smaller than what I would consider to fit the dimensions as laid down in the current legislation. I have seen these plates in the flesh and they do turn up exactly as you see them here, but are they likely to get you in trouble with the law or are they as claimed fully road legal?

The lettering might not be legal. But you'd need a really picky TRAFFIC cop to do you for that. a Regular cop wouldn't bother.
I get away with this, So I wouldn't worry.

Its a 6x4 plate, And sits at a bit of an angle.
Oh, and its tucked right up inside the rear plastics. So you can only see it from almost directly behind the bike.
I've not been bothered once yet. Thats in 6 months of riding it like that.

I think you'll be absolutely fine with that, the police only get arsey with numbers that are on a single line like this one.

That plate you're showing is soo close to the legal, if not 100% you'd never be bothered. |

I believe it is also supposed to have a line at the bottom stating who made the plate also, but thats a minor point. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. You have said yourself though that you never get bother because you know all the police around there and they know you, and I can't see you having taken that far out of that area. ____________________ Don't practice it until you get it right, practice it until you don't get it wrong.

ive been done for having my plate at an angle and the ironic thing was I had a legal plate.. Ive had I think 3 fines for non compliance before on a "show plate" and that was because of a font that looked only slightly bolder. it was 5x6 but that doesnt matter .. I use a legal plate now..
Ive been threatened to be taken to court to led the judge decide wether my L plate position was legal aswell.. I have it where binges plate is..

In fairness mine isnt that silly.
Sitting in a car, behind my bike, You can clearly read the plate. It looks like its upright too.
Just the size lets it down. But in proportion to the bike, It doesn't look too bad I dont think.

Thus I put silly in quotes - and to be fair, from other angles, I suspect it's hard to see, especially from speed cameras.
Obviously were you to do a hit and run, anyone to the right hand side or above (trucks etc) you wouldn't be able to get your plate. However, personally, I think it's more important to not hit and run in the first place than to have a plate that may aid your escape if you do . |

Well I have more or less come to the conclusion that the style of plate I originally posted about is not actually 100% legal. The size of the digits don't seem to be big enough to comply with the current legislation, so I reckon that the only legal style GB plates are like this one that I have attached below:
