How'd you get the shutter speed fast enough to catch a moving 98 R1?

It is true they are not great quality, especially compared to the stuff some of our bcf members have done, but that doesn't mean he should be afraid to put his stuff up. I myself have bought a DSLR and it is very hard to get a good shot without the knowledge and tools.

yes, sorry BCF has re-sized the pictures making them pixley/choppy/rough edges etc to fit them in the guide lines of the forum.

I shall have to resize them.

When talking about quality i take it you mean this as the only one when viewed at correct size that is slightly blurry is the horsey (My first day Smile ) the rest of the are pretty damn sharp!

Full sized pictures in no particular order...

Good shots, but the ones with the bike moving have been taken with a shutter speed which is too high resulting in the frozen wheels and the lack of speed in the photos.

Next time drop the shutter speed a bit and pan with the bike. The tank is a useful point on the bike to use as a reference as you pan. Thumbs Up

For example:

https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3153/3012129633_9eae81f6d1.jpg

I do have car photo's that illustrate the point better, like:

https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3385/3297231527_2d33b1d017.jpg

this taken at 1/30 or so.

Will hopefully have a longer play next time.

I generally pan with shutter speed roughly equivalent to the subjects speed, 30mph - 1/30th, 60mph - 1/60th, etc etc. had some decent results this way

Aye, I was shooting quite a few at 1/30, I think that's one of them.

You get about 1 good image from 6-10 attempts though. Laughing

I shot that one with a monopod too which makes it much easier.

Thumbs Up

Next time I'm there I may try even lower....

EDIT-

Just checked the exif's on Flickr, you're quite right, that's a 1/50 shot, Copse is quite quick. This one's at 1/30 in Copse though.

Panning shots with slow shutter speeds look great but you gotta be prepared for a lot of 'duds' Cool

I tend to cheat when taking trackday photos most of the time, just to maximize the amount of clear shots. Allways scared I'll miss something

I dont know the exact speed of all of these but I tend to stick around 250 or 320. I do it all freehand with a cheap lens so they're never going to be great.

That shot of the RR is awesome with the front compressed.

Pics are good Groove but Ham got in here before I did and he's right, try practicing a bit of panning to give a sense of speed. The R1 wheelie shot would of looked amazing like that Thumbs Up

Keep it up dude.

Ham, those bloody impressive on shutter speeds that slow, even if you only get a 1 in 10 good shot ratio Wink

Had a little go today at lunch time at work. Not the most interesting pictures but just really chance to practice. The sense of speed is much higher in these, but shutter speed wasnt as low as it could of been it seems! Need to get to a track this weekend!

Here are the resized pictures:

Again at 1/80th

Not bad for a 2nd 10 minute play (well, if i say so myself! Razz )

Shame about the twigs that kept getting in my way Laughing

Comments?

Much better shots, nicely blurred wheels and a slightly blurred background.

Bikes are easier on track to get a sense of speed than cars because of the way the bike rider moves around so you can get away with faster shutter speeds on bikes than cars.

It all depends on the speed of the vehicles at the given point on the track, although for the track 1/60 for cars and 1/100 or 1/80 for bikes was giving me consistant results with the budget Canon 55-250. Thumbs Up

If you want to do more it may be worth looking at a monopod, they can be quite useful.

Thumbs Up
