That's some seriously crap journalism from the Times. They have two articles up on the same subject, one of which says ministers are 'looking at' the change and the other one (in the first post) says that the speed limit will be cut and will take effect as early as next year.
There's a good press release from the Association of British Drivers on this:
| Quote: | Anti Car Extremists Drive 50 Limit Proposals
Driving Skills to be Destroyed to Suit Eco Agenda
Government plans to reduce all rural single carriageway speed limits to 50mph and enforce them with average speed cameras were condemned today by the Association of British Drivers as a "speed bully" policy which signals the end of driving excellence in Britain.
Environmentalists, and others who believe that driving is "anti social at any speed", have long campaigned for lower limits - in 1995 Friends of the Earth said:
"speed limits should be made very low and rigidly enforced to take all the glamour out of motoring"
"This is nothing to do with road safety", said the ABDs Nigel Humphries. "Anyone can see that hazards vary along rural roads, and so speeds must vary with them. A blanket 50 mph speed limit does not recognize that roads vary enormously in character and that a limit as low as 50 is totally unnecessary on many rural roads".
For the last fifteen years, whilst road death numbers have failed to improve, the only road safety policies promoted by the government and their advisors have been those which make life more difficult and unpleasant for drivers. In contrast, investment in driving skills or improvements to dangerous roads have been played down.
The over-emphasis on speed as the sole determinant of road safety statistics was always misleading and such a policy has and always will fail to achieve what is intended.
To enforce this new regime we are expected to put up with intrusive monitoring of our driving. This is yet another step in implementation of a "surveillance society" where your every move is monitored and no individual discretion is allowed. Instead of encouraging intelligent and responsible driving, based on the road conditions and the vehicle being used, we have this dictatorial regime that attempts to monitor and control our minute to minute driving standards. It will, of course, have exactly the opposite effect of suppressing the decisions that drivers need to make in this timeframe.
We are pleased that there will be a proper public consultation on this matter, so that the general public have their say on whether they think it is a wise and a proportional response to the problems of road traffic accidents.
"Speed bully" policies have been rolled out by stealth, one limit or scheme at a time, and so largely ignored by the media. Now it is national and "official", we hope that this policy will be exposed for the ignorance that it demonstrates, and that Britain's electorate will tell the government what they think of it. |

Considered using a circular saw for a while, not sure on the power required by a speed camera though, dont really fancy cutting through a high power cable.
I'll stick with black bags and gaffa tape for now

“But when you compare that to the fact we are killing 3,000 people a year on our roads, it would be irresponsible not to do something about it. I’m sure that the vast majority of motorists would support the proposals.”
This sort of bullshit makes me laugh.
These average speed cameras are being put up on the stretch of the M5 i travel to work on. The speed limit there right now is 50mph, they are on temporary signs but it is worrying.
So far ive been travelling past them at about 80-90mph and no letter yet.
50mph is bullshit.
Hit a human being with 1-3 tonnes of vehicle at anything over 40mph and that person will not be winning any marathons. End of.
3000 people killed on the roads is a small number as it is.
Take into account the people driving, drunk
Driving emergency service vehicles
The people who drive cars with a 0-1 star N-cap rating
The people distracted before a crash (mobiles, animals, pedestrians, big tits)
Diesel spills
The list goes on...
You end up with a lot less than 3000 people dead due to speed alone. And speed or not, no one is 'OK' with non speed related death in the family. ____________________ Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.

They recently resigned the country road that runs to where I work from NSL to 50mph, there's absolutely no reason to do it, I traveled it twice a day for the last 2years nearly and never seen one accident, the company runs trucks up and down it all day long so would know if there' accidents along there. There's only one house along the whole 3miles and the vast majority is double whites due to a few hills and corners.
Are we sure we're killing 3000 people ont the roads each year, are the vast majority of them not killing themselves, and if the cars involved had been doing 50 would they all still be alive, total crap.
I'm sick to death of the endless bombardment of adverts on the radio at the moment telling you what to do, the dead kid following you around adverts, the having sex without a condom adverts, the im scared my mummy's going to die of cancer smoking advert, the you wouldn't start a night like this advert, the dvla will hunt you down and eat you advert, the tv licencing authority will tear you a new one if you evade them advert They Live |
