I can't be the only one who keeps damaging themself on their bike when they aren't actually riding it.

There are all the usual skinned knuckles etc. but sometimes you manage to get a whopper.

My VFR750 broke down on Friday about 3 miles from my girlfriends house (reg/rec packed in). I reckoned I'd be just as well pushing it for the amont of time recovery would take. Well, it weighs in the region of 500lb with the luggage on, so pushing is no mean feat.

Got that one sussed though. Pass a luggage strap through the rear rack and round your waist so you steer and brake using the bars but you are actually "towing" the bike by the strap. This makes the job a LOT easier but still serious physical effort.

Got it there and all was going well until I woke up the next morning. I appear to have partially torn the collateral ligaments of my big toe. I can't bear weight on the front part of my left foot and I can hardly walk. It's getting worse if anything, the joint is well swollen and I can barely put my shoes on.

Nobody at work is going to believe I did this PUSHING the bloody thing.

So, how have other people injured themselves on their motorcycles?

Because I have a few bikes in my garage, I regularly manage to gouge my arse or back on a serrated footpeg when squatting down to do something on one of the other bikes.

Fucking things, good for grip when your boot is covered in cack, not so good for my delicate white skin. I think some little knitted safety covers are in order!

Bleeding the front brake on my CB250RS, I rigged up my jam jar and started pumping away on the lever whilst watching the bubbles. Just as I gave the lever a good squeeze, the tube slipped off the nipple, and I took a squirt of brake fluid straight into my eye. Cue a hospital trip and patch.

When I wash my bike theres a split pin somewhere by the footpeg / rear brake piston that I always take a chunk of finger out.

My new one is the aluminium guard I made to protect the radiator from stones, it has very sharp edges which usually catch me out doing an oil change or cleaning the downpipes.

Gonna make sure my next bike has red faring so the blood doesn't show up so much during cleaning Wink

That is an epic push mate, no wonder your feet weren't impressed!

I have dropped several bikes on myself causing foot and shin scrapes and bruises. Also torn muscles trying in vain to stop bikes falling away from me after tipping them too far in the garage.

Nothing more exciting than that whilst not actually riding.

I did the same thing to my big toe pushing the Chinkmobile up my mate's 1:1 drive.

I also run like a gimp now because I have kicked the chinkmobile over so many times in quick sucession (i.e. like 50 times in a row when it won't start, then it randomly fires up). I reckon the kick counter for that bike in the few weeks I have owned it must be over 1000.

one or two finger scuffs and burns from hot exhausts.

Worst was partially bike related....

Cooking the day before my DAS, managed to burn my arm with red hot sticky stir-fry sauce.

Cleaned and covered it all up and next day went on the DAS.
Baking hot June day, lots of standing around in sweltering gear and my arm blistered up all over the burns, leaving scarring in all sorts of places...

I seem to remember looking closely at something on the back wheel of my GPz and burning the tip of my nose on the shiny new Neta exhaust I had fitted the day before. I think this is the first time I told anyone that, the hand story reminded me.

I burnt my hand on the 636's can on Friday. The catalytic converter lives in the bottom of the can and runs at about 700 degrees C, so it gets super hot. Laughing

Hi

Cleaning up a chewed up crash bung with a cutting disk on a Dremel, so that I could get a socket on it. Cutting disk broke, flew up and landed on my arm leaving a small burn scar.

All the best

Keith

None for me, but my friend was trying to start my brothers mini-moto with the pull start and sliced 4 fingers on the sharp fairing. He bled for AGES.

Was like punching the blade of a butterknife as hard as he could

I've got a scar on my knuckle from where I was working on the NC30 on a really tough and obscurely placed nut... think it was when I was draining the cooling system, anyway, I was putting a fair amount of force into getting this nut undone; the tool I was using slipped off the bolt in the general direction of the other side of the bike taking the underneath route, my hand followed at great speed and I basically ended up punching the bike and I gauged out a piece of flesh on the edge of an entirely different bolt that was chilling out in that general area.

Not as bad as OP's misfortunes but have you ever tried putting a plaster on a knuckle, it's proper awkward.

The one i do a lot is putting my foot down to put the kick stand up and knocking it into first. Which leaves me with a huge bruise on the back of my leg because i must do it twice a week. I have now learnt to keep the clutch in though. Thumbs Up Wink

When I first got my 125 after my first ride out more than 5 miles I was curious how hot the exhaust could be. The answer was very. Very hot.

When i first had my NSR i was taking out the engine with my dad holding the bike up. Only i forgot that the twist grip was loose from removing the cable and just as i pulled the engine out the grip slid off resulting in a firm bash to the nuts from the handlebar when the bike fell over.
It almost cut a hole clean through my jewel sack.

I find this slightly ironic, when you once said that the weight of a road bike was completely irrelevant, and I was daft to think of it as a consideration.

Hope you get better, I cant imagine torn ligaments are fun.

I've managed to do some kind of muscle or ligament damage playing football. I'll leave it a week or two and think its healer, will then play football again, and it comes back.

I think I once overexerted myself pushing one of my bikes, but they are all pretty light, so I was fine in a day or so.

I dropped a ZX7R on my finger once when a trolley jack slipped. 203kgs on my index finger. I was screaming in agony for my friend to come and lift the damn thing off me, but he just carried on chatting on the phone! Rolling Eyes

Hmm I was looking quite closely at this bolt and I squirted a bit of wd40 on it. Queue it being bounced off and into my eye. Other than that just skinned knuckles.
