well i bought the bike as a project a few years back for £200, sold the trailer that came with it for £150 so not a bad start.
its a bit of a hotch potch of a cr500 :/ runnin yamaha front forks and 2 pot stoppers, plastics were and still are in need of a good clean up. When i first got the bike it would take a lot, a hell of a lot to get it going and then it would smoke real bad, still pulled my arms out the sockets , so out came the engine, what a nightmare, there didnt seem to be much worth keepin both side covers are holed, the clutch basket has had 2 of the inner posts snapped off the piston was cracked and the conrod felt way to sloppy, i wasnt all to happy, the engine got boxed the bike buried at the back of my shed and thats where it stood till now, im hoping to revive it, god knows how cause the parts seem to be crazy prices, but it seems the engines will sell for crazy prices anyway. so im on the look out for an engine and mean while im re-evaluating the current engine and building a parts list.. oddly my engine code matches to the year i was told (88) but the stamped frame code seems way off, doesnt even seem to be a honda code although the frame is deff a honda one,, code is H, ?(possible M), ? (possible P), ? (possible P), E 02-5700106 means squat to me, dreaming to turn it into a road going super moto for twisty fun.
so any ideas on what road wheels i can get onto this bike easy enough (would love some spoked but they sell for a song) and if my engine is past resurrection any idea what engine would make a good transplant for a roady super moto |

What do you want to achieve?
Most CR500 projects I've seen haven't turned out amazingly well and have ended up costing a lot of money - and not actually been that much faster than many other bikes out there.
Were it me, I'd be tempted to try and make what money I could from selling on the parts.
Ok, they're even rarer, but for a mega-smoker project I'd choose one of these if I couldn't afford a Maico/ATK: https://www.bikepics.com/pictures/471254/ (KTM 550 MXC). Alternatively, KTM360s were made until fairly recently, make similar peak power to a CR500 and have much better availability of bits. |
