If you want a trip into the total perspective vortex, then then look up 'VY CMa'
Now our sun is pretty big to us no? ... our sun is over 1.3 million times the volume of the Earth ... now that is BIG ...
VY CMa the largest known star (sun) ... and its proper big .... at the speed of light it'd take >8hrs to orbit at its edge ...
The speed of light is ~6.7e+08 (670 Million) MPH ... so it'd still take you >8hrs at 670million MPH to fly round its edge ... that's pretty fecking big!!
EDIT:
Just looked it up ... if you can't fathom the speed of light to get an idea of size - here's a fact off wikipedia that might make it slightly more fathomable ...
"It would take over 7,000,000,000,000,000 (7 Quadrillion) earths to fill VY Canis Majoris" ... now that is large ... and its only a sun ... you know ... one of those sparkles in the sky ...!! ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity. |

Last time I checked the speed of light was 3x10e8 m/s
That is 3x10e8 X 1600/3600 (metres in a mile and seconds in an hour)
That comes out as 1.33x 10e8 mph
which is "only" 133 million mph (a fifth of your value)
How about we calculate the volume of the star?
Circumference ->
8 hours = 28800 seconds
28800 x 300,000,000 = 8.64x10e12 m = p2r -> r = 1.375x10e12 m
volume = 4/3 p.r3 = 1.089x10e37
Roughly 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,0 metres cubed.
An easy comparison to make with our Earth is this:
The radius of the Earth is 6400km or 6,400,000m
The radius of this star is roughly 1,375,000,000,000m
So around 215000 times wider than the Earth.
I might have made some mistakes here but yeah, it does put shit into proportion. And to think that that star is about as significant to the universe as the monday night meal of an amoeba in the sea is to you... Big stuff we're dealing with |

In your small world view, you might think you are significant (same for everyone) but in reality you aren't. Nothing you do (or can do) on this earth will make a blind bit of difference to anything really.
In the end, we're all just dust floating in space. |
That's quite a one dimensional view/
Yes, we are cosmic dust, but the world itself only exists to us, as individuals, becuase we exist: when I die, the entire universe no longer "exists" to me (becuase I don't exist to perceive it). Therefore the grandness of the cosmos only actual exists as a imago of my consciousness: it's relevance to me is contigent upon my consciousness of it.
On those grounds, it is a paradox:
(a) humans are no more important than ants - and our deaths are no more of a "tragedy" than ants being trod on. In fact, the annihilation of the entire species, our history and everything else, in a microsecond - to the universe, is of no relevance. Hardly worth a cosmic mumur.
B) But to me, I cannot cease to be the centre of the universe because all sensory activity for me, leads to me. Without my consciousness, I am not conscious of the universe: so for the splendor of the universe to have any importance it requires an individual to be cognisant of it.
A and B don't contradict each other: humans are both totally inconsequential and at the same the individual human self is the only thing of worth - not only this, but it is the only thing that can be of any worth, all other values, senses, experiences, etc, derive from the egotistical self.
Those who say these pictures will change thier perspective are generally kidding themselves. This afternoon you'll be back to watching crap on television as though that was the centre of the universe. ____________________ no regrets, no retreat, no apology.

The speed of light in a vacuum is indeed about 3x10e8 m/s {or if you want the precise value} 299,792,458 m/s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_light
As for your calculation/conversion
You need to multiply the m/s by 3600 to get meters/hour then divide that lot by 1600 to get into MPH.
So try the same sum but the correct way round … i.e. 3x10e8 X 3600/1600 = 6.75x10e8 = 675million (MPH)
If you want it a bit more precise (using the exact value for light and meters in a mile) ... 299,792,458 X 3600/1609.344 ... or ~670million MPH ...
Your other calculations (radius and volume etc) however are indeed correct, gold on that lot Svedebo (pun intended!!)!! ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity. |
