Hi lads, not so much bike related. I've got 3 years ncb from a car. I sold that and now have a transit. Insured with that as 3 years ncb and now I have a shitty letter saying its not acceptable as it was earnt from a car policy. Is this standard with all companys as i cant see the issue with it?

It's just another way for the criminal insurance companies to defraud the public out of yet more money.

Parasitic scum, who are able to commit their crimes with impunity because they have the govt in their back pocket.

If your driving the van under the same entitlement as the car, which I think you are unless the van weighs more than 3500kg, then I would tell them to shove it and hopefully with a stance like that they will 'give you special treatment'.

It's only a SWB transit, so i dont see the problem. Its a monthly policy with e-van so once its expired they can bollox lol. Piss take

I van is for carrying a load. The insurers must asume it has to be used as a goods carrying vehicle. Unless inspected and modified to Not carry goods or summat.
They are only protecting there bottom brackets.

Try calling another broker.

Not completely different as my car is taxed as a PLG (Private Light Goods Vehicle) a SWB van can be driven on a car license as mentioned so there is no reason you should not be able to use your NCB on the van as it has a similar wheel base as a Chelsea Tractor only without seats inside!

Just make sure if you are using it to carry loads for work that you insure it for business use (usually a bit more expensive than SCP - social commuting and pleasure)

What page are you reading from?
DVLA have nowt to do with how insurance companies make their rules or set premiums.

your van is a commercial vehicle and is insured as such hence you cannot carry over your NCB from PLG. This is exactly the same as trying to use your can NCB for a bike.

I had the same troubles a little while ago with a vw transporter.

Defraud - yeah, insurance companies are defrauding people by offering them a discount. Makes perfect sense. What insurers should do is not offer the discount under any circumstances and then that way they'll make sure they don't defraud anyone.

CV bonus is different to PC bonus is different to MC bonus is different to Motor Trade bonus. Generally speaking (there are exceptions) you can't transfer one from another because it's an NCD based on your experience with a certain policy. If you really want to extend the argument out then why can't you use household bonus against your motorcycle because that's been claim free?

You don't have to like it, it's just the way it is and there's logical reasons for it - which you'd realise if you stop up and think about it rather than going off on some vitriolic rant

Last year i successfully carried 3 or 4 years CAR NCB onto a van insurance policy without any problems at all

I wouldn't worry. If they've accepted it and not come back to you then it will just transfer to CV bonus now. The issue will be if you want to swap it back to PC you may have problems later on but you'll just have to play that one carefully

I read the other day that motor insurance is a loser for insurance co's, they pay out £1.15 for every £1 they take in.

due to market pressures they cant increase premiums because people will always pay for the cheaper cover, this deficit is made up in other insurances like home, contents, pet and so on.

In general terms, yes that's correct. Motor Insurance is incredibly price sensitive and the churn rate on policies is pretty huge. The same can be said for Household policies but the claims frequency and severity is somewhat lower in general terms, so margins aren't so stretched.
