I recently bought my bandit, and the ignition barrel had been changed by a previous owner. Obviously, this means that I've got two keys for the bike at the moment, which is a pain in the arse.

Is it possible to get an ignition barrel made that uses the same key as the fuel tank/underseat storage? Or do I just go to Suzuki and pay whatever they demand for it?
It's only a mild irritation, but it'd be nice to not have that bloody horrible buzzing noise caused by having a second key vibrating away on the top yoke when riding...

Hi

While a locksmith might be able to dismantle the ignition switch and alter it to use the same key as the other locks I suspect that this would land up costing you more than a new lockset.

All the best

Keith

I think Suzuki can make a barrel up for you but it won't be cheap, ring your local dealer.

Hi

By the way, if you did land up buying a full matching lock set then you could probably sell the old ones to recoup some of your cost.

All the best

Thanks for the swift responses, guys Smile
I'm getting on the phone to Suzuki to find out costs from them, on both methods, just to compare costs.

There are plenty of locksets on ebay if you go that route,

https://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/_W0QQ_dmdZ2?_nkw=suzuki+bandit+lockset&_sacat=0&_fromfsb=&_trksid=m270.l1313&_odkw=ebay+uk%27&_osacat=0

I think having a barrel made up may be cheaper though.

Well, sod that. They said that they wanted £150 for the ignition switch alone. I wouldn't mind so much, but the bike itself was a grand, so there's really no point.
Guess I'll either get an unkeyed fuel cap and ignore the underseat storage, or just deal with the buzzing.

Free solution ftw, I guess.

edit: sorry didn't read your interim reply. Wasn't having a go at your response.

Hi

I would just stick with having 2 keys (paint one a different colour to remind you which is which if you are unsure).

All the best

If it bothers you that much just glue a small piece of velcro to the top yoke and key then stick it down when you are riding.

Yeah: I've got no problem telling the difference: one is (i'm told by the guy that did me a spare set) a Kwak key, the other one's got Suzuki on it large letters.
I'm not brave/stupid enough to ride drunk/exhausted/otherwise wasted, so confusing the two shouldn't be an issue.

I'm thinking of how I can deaden that buzz, though. I might just bung a bit of gaffer tape on the top yoke, so it doesn't rattle as loudly.

edit: Dammit, stop posting faster than me! Laughing
Velcro sounds even better than gaffer tape, so +1 to that.

Hi

To be honest it isn't something that bothers me (and plenty of my key rings have more the one key, even it the other is for a U lock).

Maybe the solution is ear plugs Wink .

All the best

I've always had my bike key on it's own and the rest of the keys (alarm fob, garage key, whatever) in my pocket. The CBR had a different ignition key so I got into the habit. T'also means (with an alarm) if you leave your keys in the ignition it won't actually start.

Get one of the little clippy bits from a lanyard and use that to attach your bike key to the keyring when you're not riding.

binge; that really, really needs to be sold in some kind of lurid pink.
It'd complete the image utterly.

It's just a bit of a shame that something that's so obviously practical is also so screamingly gay. Like bumbags.

Notice how you don't say that you wear it, though. Doesn't that say something? Wink
