I don't personally but then a mate of mine does and says that you should because of decibel levels.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to go deaf or anything but it seems to me a 20 min iPod session at a reasonable volume hurts my ears more than 3 hours on the bike so it leaves me a little confused if I'm honest

I'd love to get a decibel meter and see what db levels you're actually subjected to

I have never really felt the need to wear them. Maybe if i was racing in MotoGP or superbikes but for a normal ride dont see the point.

Hi

I have some custom made ones. Can't get on with the foam ones generally, although I find the foam ones are more effective for the short time I can get them to stay in place. Only set I have found that work were some which get left on the parcel shelf of the car for the summer and now take ages to expand. These work brilliantly but needing 6 months of summer before they are any use makes them a bit inconvenient.

Noise inside a crash helmet is massive. Years back PB did a test with a load of helmets, a rider with a noise meter microphone in their ear and a bike ridden on a test track at 100mph. The quietest helmet was 105db, the noisiest was 120db (noise is pretty much entirely down to wind). Based on a rule of thumb that 85db is safe for 8 hours, and each 3db increase halves that safe exposure time it seems thatat 100mph the safe exposure time was from about 4 minutes down to about 8 seconds.

All the best

Keith

I don't wear ear plugs day to day, even though i've got some. I'll wear them if im riding with the other half because his can deafens me but that's about it. I know i should wear them all the time but laziness stops me. When i get tinitus i'll have no one to blame but myself. Sad but true.

Must change before it's too late.

Earplugs and good observation are the most important safety factors whilst riding a bike.

I don't want to go deaf, so I wear plugs, I don't want to crash so I watch what I (and every body else) am/is doing.

Squishy foam ones for me for any length of journey. Only recently started using them and by fuck does it improve things!!! Don't lose any sense of what's going on - can still hear the engine and other cars, and get a faint wind whistle inside the Arai, but wouldn't ride without them now.

Noise from a can is not the most damaging thing.
It is mainly caused by air whistling over the helmet and causing turbulance under the chin. (venturi/aerofoil effect)
Get into the habit of stuffing plugs in your ears every ride.
Tinitus is not the problem it's deafness. Smile
And it take years to happen.

Ipods are just as bad at damaging your ears too of course...

That may be so but it's still a risk myself and many others still take.

I didnt spend a fortune on exhausts and filters to not be able to hear it. Wink Laughing

That makes no sense at all as you can still hear your exhaust and induction noise as earplugs don't block that frequency, they stop the wind noise.

Just think a few years down the line you will only hear the constant whistling due to tinitus. . . . . . I kid you not.

Ditto and they're one of the best 'bike' related things I've bought. Not just for riding in, but for really loud concerts too. I went for the ones with the little vents in, so I can still hear everything as it should be it's just quieter.

My hearing is noticeably affected if I forget my earplugs and ride for more than an hour or so, have to keep getting people to repeat themselves for the rest of the day.

I only do very short journeys without earplugs these days.

jokingly said or not thats a silly reason for purposely damaging your ears.

at speeds of 50+ it takes just 15minutes to do permanent damage. not a pleasant thought.

besides, with my ear plugs in i can still hear my engine, exhaust, etc.. but i dont hear any of the wind noise and thats what causes the damage.

dont get me wrong, if im popping to the shops 5 mins away i wont put mine in, but i know i wont be doing speeds much over 40mph. if i know i will be they always go in. its surprising the difference in wind noise just going 40-50mph. that 10mph makes such a difference. at least it seems to fo me.

I do on long journeys but not on my commute which is only 20 mins in 30's and 40's. It also helps keep concentration levels up I think.
