Ok, so really panicking for a freind here.
He calls me up and reports was on a motorway going about 120 in fast lane, reports seeing a blacked out landrover sport with tinted rear windows as he's passing it looks in window briefly and see's two figures of authority, white shirts etc.

Thinks... shit but probably not and continues and watches his mirrors for the land rover to rull out behind him... about 200 yards

he notices this does happen so he panicks and goes for it... 150 now down a straight looks in mirror and can see blue but think's he's imagining it. slows enough to sit up and turn around... definitely not imagining it blue flashing lights in the distance behind him...

he turns around and just rides like he's never ridden before, 150 flat out all the way. KEeps looking behind and see's nothing. confident he's lost them he gets off the motorway and gets to where he's going.

He's fucked right?

He's panicking and know's he's done something very stupid.

-The above is a call from my friend a couple days ago, as far as I know it's a fictional even that never happened, he's always lying...

Surely unless they have proof he was riding they can't do anything?

I had the police around here when my mate got chased on a Ninja (now one of the most wanted vehicles in the area) as he had hidden it in the back garden.

I have so much bike gear in my house that he dumped his stuff with mine and when the copper asked which one of us was riding we all said someone nicked it, returned it, and legged it across the fences.

What are they gonna do?

He'd only be fucked if they can a) Prove his speed and/or b) Prove he knew they were the police and failed to stop.

I find it unlikely that an unmarked landrover would be carrying calibrated speed measuring equipment. Hardly what you'd call a traffic vehicle. Also unlikely they would be able to make a charge of failure to stop stick, given that the vehicle was unmarked and the windows were tinted, preventing you seeing the occupants.

A blacked out landrover with coppers in sounds like either a senior policeman on his way to a meeting, an armed response unit or a VIP security detail.

None of the above are particularly interested in traffic offences although they might have a go if they were bored enough. I've had a tug off a vanload of riot police on their way to the football for filtering on the approach to a pedestrian crossing. They clearly didn't know what they were on about regarding traffic law.

hmmm, now why don't millions of motorists say exactly that whenever they get a nip through the door for being caught with a speed camera.

Err they do?

Well not that it has been nicked but they often pass the points to spouse or whoever if they already have lots.

All I know is that's what we said, they arrested the two blokes who weren't wearing dressing gowns and then let them go later without charge.

I don't think they need the speed for a dangerous driving offence. also they may have seen him looking behind him to see the blue flashing lights which would be a fail to stop

The owner of the car will be asked who was driving the car, if they refuse to say they will then be charged with the offence

So they can pass it over then as long as the other person agrees they were driving.

I didn't say he should pass over the ban, I said surely they would need to prove it was him riding the bike.

I know innocent until proven guilty is rare nowadays but what if the bike had been taken for a joyride and then returned after a chase?

Was told to do this by a friend if i ever set off a speedy cam

I was selling the bike and had 5 people test ride the bike on that day give 5 mates names (making sure they have any bike insurance)
I cant exactly pinpoint which one of them was testing it at that exact time.

Because coppers are'nt that thick

Next they would ask Why would somebody take your bike and return it (Doesnt happen often does it)

You say it wasnt you and they'll ask where were you (Have you got any alibi's)

You could say oh im sorry officer i was in all day They would say and you didnt noticed your bike being stolen then brought back without a scratch Neutral

Unless they used calibrated speed measuring equipment, were trained in its use and followed correct procedure for obtaining a speed with it then he has little to worry about in terms of his speed.

I very much doubt a failing to stop charge would stick considering its an unmarked car. Blue lights don't identify a police vehicle, they identify an emergency service vehicle.

So all those people on Road Wars we seen being chased down by an unmarked Omega are fools for stopping? And all the people I've seen around Cardiff stopped by an unmarked BMW are too?

This is before I even get into thinking the cops might be following you and deciding to try and outrun them.

I thought the calibrated equipment was purely a replacement for having a second cop to corroborate their opinion?
If your friend was doing a real 120mph in the outside lane, I suspect it's quite unlikely the cops would have got the plate, especially if they weren't expecting to need to get it.

I once again would like to say that I find it highly unlikely that a blacked out landrover is being used as a traffic car.

As such it will not be equipped with any of the usual evidence gathering devices, not will it contain coppers who are experienced or interested in traffic prosecutions. If it chased after him, it was probably on the off chance he stopped, whereon he would have been given a bollocking and sent on his way.

It is not unusual for a copper to get it into his head he is Mad Max and start chasing after someone, even in a panda car, without training for high speed driving and when he knows he has no chance of making something stick if you did happen to stop.

Hell, I've had an off duty copper chase after me at three figures speeds in his own car then drive next to me on a dual carriageway holding his warrant card against the passenger window while steering with one hand. I waved.

Remember, well over 1000 police officers in the UK are convicted criminals themselves.

from my pov unless they have video evidence they cant do a damn thing.

one of my m8s likes to 'progress' rather rapidly everywhere and he's had various police turn up at his house after he's blown past them on the road.

police 'we saw you speeding' or similar
him 'prove it'

their word against yours and theses days just coz they're coppers doesnt hold any more weight than yours. they need evidence.

this all said if he was caught on camera he'd better get ready to make best friends with mr big.
